Update: Teen driver tells deputy how it happened
   January 24, 2012

Note: Story updated 11:28 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 26.

A 17-year-old girl survived a horrific, single-car accident that closed northbound Route 29 just north of Warrenton late Tuesday morning.

Her red 2005 Toyota Celica slammed into a tree on the east side of the highway.

First responders cut the roof from the car to free its driver.

First responders summoned a medical helicopter, but the crew couldn’t find a suitable landing area near the Jamison’s Farm subdivision, according to emergency radio traffic.

An ambulance took the young driver to Fauquier Hospital.

The teenager, from Harper's Ferry, W.Va., suffered injuries to her right leg and foot, sheriff's Lt. James Hartman said. She also faded in and out of consciousness, according to emergency radio conversations.

The driver told a sheriff's deputy that she was using a can of compressed air to clean the car's console, when she drifted off the right side of the highway, Lt. Hartman said. The deputy did find a can of compressed air in the car, he added.

Authorities charged her with failing to maintain proper control of the vehicle, Lt. Hartman said.

Sheriff’s deputies stopped traffic just after 11 a.m. But, by 11:30, the road reopened.

This is truly horrific!Good to hear that an on-board event data recorder (EDR) was initially used by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration in 1991 to determine the details surrounding an automotive crash, the automotive industry knew it was the coming trend. Today, a car computer captures a fantastic deal of data regarding your driving habits within its crash recorder, and even save your life by notifying authorities in case of a crash, through a service like OnStar. But for some, the EDR represents an unnerving invasion of security - and they'll be standard in all vehicles by 2013, states the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. I am glad to report that this young lady is doing better today having finally gotten some much needed rest and fluids for dehydration. She is in great spirits and is ready to go home tomorrow!
I went to The Fauquier Bank today and opened an account in the name of Becky and Jennifer if anyone would like to donate funds to the family to assist with their financial strain due to hospital bills, lab bills, doctor bills etc. The mother had recently become unemployed due to continued pain and medical issues from a recent wreck of her own therefore she does not have medical insurance at this time. Thank you in advance from me, a friend, and the family for any help you may be able to render during the time of financial strain!!!
I am able to give you the account number to the Fauquier Bank account so that individuals can give in their own time.
Account # 902230607

Please continue to remember this accident victim. She has had a tough day and is very weak. Doctors are checking for more possible bodily injury as result of the wreck. This incident is a great financial issue for the family. Thanks

Actually the chopper did not even fly due to weather issues. I am glad to say that this young lady was a real trooper. She was in immense pain and will be for awhile. Please pray for her and her family that she will be able to get back on her feet in 3-4 weeks. She is a very blessed little lady.
