County leaders to seek public input next week
   February 02, 2012

Call it “Town Hall Fever.”

But, you can’t accuse county leaders of ducking their constituents.

Supervisors Lee Sherbeyn (Cedar Run District) and Chester Stribling (Lee District) announced weeks ago that they will host monthly meetings with constituents at the Remington Lions Club.

The first “town hall meeting” will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Mr. Sherbeyn, a freshman on the board, and Mr. Stribling, starting his third term plan, to conduct the sessions the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m.

This week, Center District’s new supervisor and school board member announced they will do something similar.

Supervisor Chris Granger and school board member Brian Gorg will conduct an open meeting with constituents at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, in the Warren Green Building at 10 Hotel St. in Warrenton.

Mr. Granger and Mr. Gorg started their first four-year terms last month.

Their Center District meeting will focus on education. That could get lively, with Superintendent Jonathan Lewis planning to request a “significant increase” in the $119.2 million school budget.

Of that, the county funds $76.9 million.

County government expects a revenue increase of $2.5 million in fiscal 2013. But, the supervisors so far have expressed little appetite for a real estate tax increase. The rate stands at 97 cents per $100 assessed value.

The county’s volunteer fire and rescue chiefs also want a significant budget increase. They have asked for an additional 22 professional firefighter/medics, at a cost of $1.5 million, to improve coverage throughout Fauquier.

As the county budget season heats up, those topics should be fodder for plenty of discussion at the town hall meetings next week.
