Elijah Kariuki, 6, tests the new piano at
Eva Walker Park on Tuesday in Warrenton.
Children from
Boys & Girls Club of Fauquier dedicated the piano during Warrenton’s first “Make Music Day.”
The international celebration takes place each year on June 21. About 700 towns and cities participated this year.
Hosted by
Allegro Community School for the Arts and the town recreation department, Warrenton’s celebration included local musicians and students.
Painted handprints from Boys & Girls Club members decorate the piano.
The idea for the project came from Councilman Sean Polster (At-large), who sanded and primed the instrument.
The piano, “will be on trial for 30 days, but we hope it can stay forever,” town Parks and Recreation Director Margaret Rice said.
Allegro will maintain the instrument, which it also donated.
Mrs. Rice hopes the piano will encourage citizens to get more involved in music.
“This brings the arts and the parks together,” she said.

Hello, My Name is Alex Smith and I am form Troop 175, and am trying to complete my communications merit badge. It is a requirement that I write to Magazine/Newspaper. I was wondering what role do you think music and other art activities have on a child's mind. I know there are studies on such topic, but I would like to know how you think this celebration specifically, helps spread the art, and how it will help the child involved.
