FHS science teacher’s body found in park near Midland

Fauquier sheriff’s deputies found the body of a 28-year-old Fauquier High School science teacher near Midland early Friday morning.

Authorities identified the deceased as John D. Thomas, 28, of Bealeton. The discovery took place at the John Marshall Birthplace Park just after midnight.

Late Thursday night, deputies responded to “a welfare check of a male individual,” the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release.

Working with a state police dog and handler, deputies discovered the body of Mr. Thomas, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Sheriff’s detectives are working in conjunction with the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death,” Sgt. James Hartman said in a statement. “However, there is no indication or suspicion of foul play at this time.”

FHS Principal Clarence “Tripp” Burton sent his staff an email about the death Friday morning:

Good morning. It is with deep sadness that I notify you of the passing last night of Mr. John Thomas, one of our science teachers. I apologies for having to inform you using email. We will have a faculty meeting today at 2:50 in the Falcon Room. With students you can acknowledge that this death has occurred.

If any students in your classes appear to be struggling with this news, please have them escorted to the Falcon Room with another student or staff member. We will have qualified mental health professional available for students and staff to assist any person who needs help.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Mr. Thomas and our entire school community.

Parents of FHS students also received notification of the death.
