FHS graduate finishes NCAA-Div. I tourney, 1-2
George Mason University wrestler and FHS graduate Greg Flournoy finished 1-2 at this weekend's NCAA Div. I championships in St. Louis
Greg Flournoy wrestled at 157 pounds for the Patriots this weekend. He's the second Falcon and first FHS grad to participate in the NCAA's top wrestling division.
A former Fauquier High School wrestler became only the second Falcon to wrestle in a NCAA-Div. I tournament this week.
Greg Flournoy, a 2011 FHS graduate earned his trip to the national championships after winning an Eastern Wrestling Association tournament earlier this month.
Flournoy headed to George Mason University after high school and began his collegiate career with the Patriots.
He joined Chris Moon as the second Falcon and the first county graduate to participate in the top collegiate tournament.
Moon wrestled for FHS from 2007-09 before transferring to Wyoming Seminary, in Pennsylvania for his senior season.
Moon earned a scholarship to Virginia Tech and earned a trip to nationals in 2012.
Pitted against 32 other finalists at 157 pounds, Flournoy (27-10) lost an opening round championship match Thursday, in St. Louis.
Rider University’s Chad Walsh won the close match, 2-1, in double overtime.
Moving to the consolation bracket, the Patriot won on a tie-breaker, beating Eastern Michigan’s Brandon Zeerip, 9-6.
Tied 6-6, Flournoy earned three back points in the second OT period.
But his fortune ran out Friday in the next wrestleback when Drexel’s Noel Blanco took a 3-1 decision.
After redshirting his freshman year in college, Flournoy went 15-16 in his first year of eligibility (2012-13).
Last year, the four-time Virginia all-state wrestler improved to 20-13, at 157.
He finished third in the EWL championship in 2014.
Flournoy won his class in this year’s EWL championship, earning his trip to St. Louis.
