After its recent bankruptcy filing, Texas-based Stage Stores decided not to reopen the Gordmans in the Warrenton Village Center.
The numbers have declined, but almost 2,700 Fauquier residents filed initial or continuing unemployment insurance claims last week.

New applications came from 211 Fauquier residents, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Thursday.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in massive business shutdowns and layoffs, Fauquier residents have filed 4,433 initial claims for unemployment insurance benefits.

Last week’s new applications represented a 21-percent decline from the prior week, when 268 first-time claims came from Fauquier.

The unprecedented spike in joblessness started the week of March 25.

The first-time unemployment benefits claims from Fauquier by week:

• 211 — week ending Saturday, May 16.

• 268 —May 9.

• 344 —May 1.

• 425 —April 25.

• 497 — April 18.

• 652 — April 11.

• 1,029 — April 4.

• 753 — March 28.

• 254 — March 21.

The county has a workforce estimated at 31,483.

Fauquier residents also filed 2,479 continuing claims last week — down 22 from the previous week, according to the VEC. (Unemployed workers must file each week to keep their benefits coming).

New and continuing claims totaled 2,690 as of May 16. That would put the county’s unemployment rate at 8.5 percent.

Statewide, initial claims of 44,699 last week represented a 14.3-percent decrease from the previous week.

But, continuing claims increased more than 2.3 percent to 403,557.

Nationwide, another 2.4 million people filed for unemployment insurance benefits last week. Since mid-March, applications in the U.S. have totaled 38.6 million, according to the Department of Labor.

Well it's a good thing that the construction on the Walker Drive mall project wasn't started. Will Home Goods be next?
