5 Friday Fauquier factoids: Antique vehicles in county

File Photo/Warrenton Police Department
The 2019 Father’s Day Car Show in Warrenton featured some of the county’s 1,240 registered antique vehicles. The COVID-19 pandemic forced cancellation of this year’s show.
1,240

The number of antique vehicles registered in Fauquier, according to Commissioner of Revenue Eric Maybach.

They represent 1.4 percent of the 86,451 cars and trucks registered in Fauquier.

In Virginia, vehicles 25 years and older qualify for antique status. If used only for show purposes — not daily transportation — permanent tags cost $50.

But, if used for general transportation, old vehicles — with or without antique plates — must undergo annual safety inspections and must have their registrations updated each year.

71.7

Percent of Fauquier households that had submitted U.S. Census forms as of June 24, according to county government GIS Department Director Dan Stell. That equates to about 20,790 households, based on Census Bureau’s most recent estimate, Mr. Stell said.

The 2014-18 estimate put Fauquier’s households at 24,333, he said.

Fauquier’s “self-response” rate ranks it 17th among Virginia’s 133 counties and cities and 197th among the nation’s 3,143 counties and “county-equivalents,” according to the Census Bureau.

Virginia’s self-response rate stands at 66.5 percent and the national state average at 61.7 percent.

Fauquier had a self-response rate of 68.4 percent for the 2010 Census, noted Mr. Stell, who heads a local committee that among other things encourages and promotes the completion of questionnaires.

“We’ve already exceeded that, which makes sense to me, because this is a more digital age and more people have internet and are doing it via the web,” he said. “We’re doing really well in comparison to a lot of other places.”

Using self-response options, individuals can complete Census questionnaires online, by phone or through the mail. Door-to-door Census taking will begin later this summer.

By law, the U.S. population must be counted every 10 years. Data collected get used to redraw election district boundaries, determine the number of seats each state gets in the House of Representatives and distribute hundreds of billions of federal funds to state and local governments.

$120,669

The combined parking fee revenue that Sky Meadows State Park near Paris collected in March, April and May.

That represents a 148-percent, or $71,981, increase in those fees compared with same period in 2019.

The Northern Fauquier park last month collected $63,457 in parking fees, or 248 percent more than it did in May 2019, when it received $18,246.

With people seeking outdoor activities because of the coronavirus pandemic, visitors since mid-March have flooded the park along Route 17.

342

The number of pages in the Town of Warrenton’s draft 2040 Comprehensive Plan.

In development since 2016, the completed document will guide the town’s development over the next two decades. It also details goals for economic development, recreation, transportation and quality of life in general.

The town planning commission will conduct another work session on the draft before conducting a public hearing and sending the huge document to the town council, which has final approval authority.

45

The number of inmates held at the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center as of Friday morning.

Exactly one year ago, the county jail held 86 inmates.

Meanwhile, the county had 90 inmates at the regional jail near Winchester on Friday, versus 118 there a year ago.

In total, Fauquier had 204 jailed inmates a year ago versus 135 this week.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the General Assembly and Gov. Ralph Northam in April approval an early release program to reduce the populations in Virginia jails.

The antique tag is the only tag that is purchased once and never needs renewed. Antique vehicle owners with a title or a tag will be required to pay property tax each year. It will be billed on a separate statement from the county tag department during the month other vehicle tags are due.
