5 Friday Fauquier factoids: Flags fly in Old Town


The number of American flags flying along Main Street and adjacent areas of downtown Warrenton.

The Public Works Department installs the flags for patriotic holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day and Veterans Day.

With a donation from VFW Post 9835, the town this spring replaced all of the flags.


The number of horses entered in the 100th Warrenton Pony Show as of noon Friday.

The show, which started Wednesday, continues through Sunday, June 30.

More entries probably will come in, particularly for Sunday’s classes, according to Debbie Bowden, who has served as show secretary for 25 years.


The number of fireworks shells Innovative Pyrotechnic Concepts will launch for the Warrenton Town Limits finale Friday night.

The patriotic celebration drew 20,000 people last year.

The fifth annual free event — with helicopters, games, music, food, ice cream and vendors — begins at 3 p.m. and ends with the fireworks display after dark.

Innovative Pyrotechnic Concepts will handle the fireworks for the fourth time this year. Local sponsors cover all the costs.


Premise checks that Fauquier sheriff’s deputies conducted in 2018, according to the office’s annual report, released recently.

Deputies last year also made 10,967 traffic stops.

$185.5 million

Taxable retail sales in Fauquier County during the first quarter of 2019, according to the Virginia Department of Taxation.

By category, food and beverage stores led the county’s sales, ringing up $33.5 million in sales from Jan. 1 through March 31.

The sales volume remained on pace with 2018, when it totaled $803.4 million in Fauquier.

So why again do we need more businesses in Fauquier? Based on sales we should have plenty to meet the needs of infrastructure. Perhaps it's a convenience factor that drives the wants of citizens.
