5 Friday Fauquier factoids: Hot-selling new cookbook

Clockwise from top left: Last year’s Warrenton Christmas Parade, Brian Noyes’ new Red Truck Bakery Cookbook and Wanda Simpson and Janet Rathbone’s winning gingerbread house.

The number of copies of The Red Truck Bakery Cookbook sold Oct. 28 in three hours at the bakery’s Marshall Main Street store.

The first official book signing event drew more than 200 people and featured The Cabin Raiders, a local bluegrass band.

Red Truck opened its flagship bakery in Old Town Warrenton in 2009.

The book’s first printing totals 25,000, according to publisher Clarkson Potter/Penguin Random House.

Released Oct. 23, it ranks first among bread baking books on Amazon, author and Red Truck baker-in-chief Brian Noyes said.

At 224 pages, the Red Truck Bakery Cookbook retails for $25 and includes 85 recipes for breakfast “fixins,” sweet pies, savory pies, casseroles, granola, cakes, cookies, cornbread and more.

$3 million

Combined salaries of 37 Fauquier school board office administration staff, according to Citizen Cents, an online database.

Using salaries obtained from the school system through public records requests, the website lists school employees’ salaries by location and position.

Those administrators who work in the school board office earn an average salary of $81,500.

First place prize awarded to Marilyn Bawol for winning the adult category in Warrenton’s first gingerbread house contest last week.

Ms. Bawol’s creation included an edible Santa made from gingerbread cake and a gingerbread cookie sleigh with reindeer and gifts.

Hosted by Gateau, the competition had five entries in the adult and team categories. In the team category, Wanda Simpson and Janet Rathbone won $300 for their first-place winning gingerbread house.

Entries were judged on overall appearance, originality, creativity, difficult and precision.

Entries will participate in the 32nd Warrenton Christmas Parade, starting at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30. That represents a 25-percent increase from last year’s 75 entries.

The parade will include all three county high school marching bands: Fauquier, Kettle Run and Liberty.

On Saturday, Dec. 1, Marshall’s parade will start at 11 a.m. and Bealeton’s at 1 p.m.

The value of “POP Bucks” used from June 2 to Saturday, Nov. 3, to buy goods at the Warrenton Farmers Market and Archwood Green Barns, a farmers’ market near The Plains, according to FISH, a Warrenton-based nonprofit dedicated to providing food to Fauquier’s needy.

Partnering with The Fauquier Community Food Bank, FISH received a $25,000 grant from the PATH Foundation to help fund the POP (“Power of Produce”) program, which encourages people, especially children, to make healthy food choices.

FISH, the community food bank and a Rappahannock foundation also contributed funds to support the project.

In May, each Fauquier elementary school student received two POP bucks. Distributed also through FISH, the community food bank, the county libraries and at First Friday events in Old Town Warrenton, Pop Bucks have a face value of $2 apiece.
