5 Friday Fauquier factoids: Students in Va. FFA offices

Virginia FFA members this week elected Megan Day of Liberty High and Hunter Carson of Kettle Run as state president and a vice president, respectively.

Fauquier County high school students have been elected officers of the Virginia FFA.

Megan Day of the C.L. Payne Chapter at Liberty High School will serve as the state president for 2020-21.

Hunter Carson of the Kettle Run High School will serve as one of four vice presidents.

The state organization has nine officers, elected this week during the organization’s 94th convention, conducted virtually because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Normally, the state convention takes place at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

Vendors participate in the Warrenton Farmers Market — 31 on Saturday and 10 on Wednesday — with more to come, according to Manager Elizabeth Melson.

Both the Saturday and Wednesday markets take place along First Street in Old Town.

The Saturday market operates as a “hybrid” — serving pedestrians as well as motorists who pick up orders via a drive-thru line while remaining in their vehicles, Mrs. Melson explained.

Wednesday’s pedestrians-only market started June 17.

The public’s response to the market’s new models dictated by the coronavirus pandemic has impressed her, Mrs. Melson said.

“The community has really supported our local farmers,” she said. “I think people are looking for a way to safely get out and do something. And, the market has produced that opportunity.”

The number of slaves in Fauquier, according to the 1860 Census.

They represented 48 percent of the county’s population, which stood at 21,706.

In neighboring Loudoun County, with almost an identical population of 21,774, slaves accounted for about 25.2 percent of residents. Loudoun had 5,501 enslaved people 160 years ago.

Gallons of fuel the Warrenton-Fauquier Airport near Midland sold from February through May, according to Director David Darrah.

That represents a 16-percent increase in the amount sold compared with the same months in 2019. From February through May last year, the airport sold 96,527 gallons of fuel, Mr. Darrah said in an email.

Explaining the increase, he added: “We are lucky to have loyal customers and low fuel prices.”

Fauquier County foxhunts will remain after Casanova announced June 1 that it will cease operations after 111 years.

The Casanova Hunt masters of foxhounds attributed the decision to increasing development and traffic, along with coyotes’ decimation of the local fox population.

Foxhunting clubs focus on the chase, and their packs of hounds very rarely catch a fox. Members pride themselves on sportsmanship, care of animals, stewardship of the countryside, proper attire and socialization. They typically hunt across privately-owned farmland two or three days a week, September to May.

The Fauquier-based Old Dominion Hunt (Orlean), Orange County Hunt (The Plains) and Warrenton Hunt continue among 27 clubs in the commonwealth. The “Hunt Country of Virginia” refers to this region, because of the concentration of clubs in Clarke, Fauquier, Loudoun and Rappahannock counties.

Someone's angry. I guess it's easy to be insulting when you dont use your real name, coward. You need a mental health evaluation.
AmericanPatriot · June 24, 2020 at 8:41 am
Link Donald Trump's father wearing kkk robes. I can link Northam doing that. Allen apologized his obama off, you are just to partisan and poorly read to admit that. Covid IS a left wing hoax. Have you read about the leftist run Oregon county which exempted 'people of color' from wearing masks, while it is mandatory for whites?

Trump's big crime was lowering unemployment for blacks to historical levels. No president has done more for blacks than Trump and it enrages you almost as much as when republicans took away your slaves.

American Pat can multitask, he can beat the dead horse and poke the bear at the same time.
Southern Strategy/Operation Dixie ring a bell?
George Allen made an offensive comment to a man of Indian descent, I dont recall him apologizing. As far as Donald Trump, does he really need to wear a robe to tell you where he stands, but you can find a picture of his father wearing one. Has he apologized for calling the Covid 19 virus a "Democratic Hoax" yet? It has now claimed 120,000 American lives.

What a beautiful smile word counter

Democrats fought tooth and nail to block the civil rights act. To hold on to segregation. They revered Byrd, an unrepentant KKK leader. Hillary and Bill Clinton both had racist mentors, AlGore had KKK in his immediate family.

This is a party with no shame, and no morals.
AmericanPatriot · June 21, 2020 at 5:50 pm
Democrats caused the problems. Now they have the solutions?
Badger · June 21, 2020 at 9:07 am
... yet all of the major anti-discrimination legislation in the past half century including the reforms this year in Virginia were Democratic initiatives.
AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 5:34 pm
Who is George Allen? Just a very decent and effective legislator whose political career was destroyed by a pack of leftist jackals over a comment.

While our current governor serves with absolute certainty he will not be called out for wearing KKK robes and endorsing the murder of born babies.

Sick, sick people.

AmericanPatriot - George Allen? Who is that? Oh, right that guy, forgot completely about him until you brought it up.

AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 3:11 pm
I guess when people make mistakes, they shouldn't be forgiven but branded with it forever.

Ask George Allen.
Amissville · June 20, 2020 at 2:03 pm
You would think people would be as forgiving if Donald Trump was photographed with a KKK grand wizard, or if Donald Trump was photographed in blackface? The forgiveness you speak of only seems available if your a Democrat.
Ellen Lee · June 20, 2020 at 1:13 pm
Robert Byrd said about his time with the KKK,"it was the most egregious mistake of my life". I guess when people make mistakes, they shouldn't be forgiven but branded with it forever.
AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 11:24 am
Yes they did switch, anytime anyone brings up the topic of race, the Republicans cry they're racist in order to make people shut up and continue on with the way things are.

Ellen, everywhere there is racial strife, squalor, crime and problems, democrats are in charge. Yup, they are fine with how things are.
AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 11:22 am
How long ago did the Dem party change? You can see Biden shaking hands with KKK grand wizard Robert Byrd in 2008.

Who is claiming they changed?

They just tore down a statue of US Grant in San Francisco, who led the war to end slavery.

Geez, are dems still angry about that?
AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 11:21 am
I am not a democrat, linda.

The only thing AmericanPAtriot knows how to do is beat a dead horse, over and over.

"Own your past, because its your present." Are you writing this from prison then?
Ellen Lee · June 20, 2020 at 9:48 am

Ellen Lee · June 20, 2020 at 9:45 am
The current administration is not the party of Lincoln.
Ellen Lee · June 20, 2020 at 9:42 am
"Own your past, because it's your present", that's rich.
Mr Badger, you're exactly right. Mr American Patriot, (can I call you Pat, it's unisex) do us all a favor and stop watching Fox news.
RGLJA · June 20, 2020 at 9:37 am
No Ellen, the parties did not switch. Republicans, the party of Lincoln, still support equal justice and equal opportunity for all, regardless of race. Democrats still focus on race obsessively, and still support racial preferences at every opportunity.
Ellen Lee · June 20, 2020 at 8:39 am
Mr American Patriot, I did not dispute your facts. The parties have switched now as everyone can see. Can we move forward? I wonder why you dont use your real name, I've read your posts on this site for a long time and I think they wouldn't be so crazy if you used your real name. The other day you told everyone to go to hell.
AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 7:26 am
Ellen, I notice you didn't dispute my post with facts.
AmericanPatriot · June 20, 2020 at 7:24 am
Badger, yeah, thats the narrative. But it doesn't work. Own your past, because its your present.

Look at your governor wearing kkk robes
Badger · June 19, 2020 at 10:54 pm
Yes, but unfortunately I must inform you that all those Democrats and Republicans have died, and the few surviving segregationist Dems left the the party for the GOP in the decades after the party disavowed racism and adopted its modern stance of equality for all. Sadly, the party of Lincoln is now the one opposing equality under the law as evidenced by its opposition to the equal rights amendment, LGBT rights, and anti-discrimination legislation.

Why won't American"patriot" go by his real name?

Number of slaves owned by republicans in Fauquier - 0

Number of slaves owned by democrats in Fauquier - 100%
CF3912176 · June 19, 2020 at 3:34 pm
Just checking the intent. It says the "21,706" for the number of slaves but then it says they "represented 48 percent of the county’s population, which stood at 21,706". So is it supposed to read "10,419" (48% of 21,706) or what? One way or another the math doesn't work and there is an error somewhere in this.
