62nd COVID-19 death here, 4 more hospitalizations

Getting The Vaccine

Under “Phase 1c,” all Virginians 65 and older may register — along with those 16 to 64 with certain medical conditions or who work in specific occupations.

The number of people who want the vaccine far outnumbers the supply. It will require patience.

Fauquier has its 62nd death attributed to COVID-19 and 4 more infected patients in hospital beds.

Meanwhile, the pace of vaccinations statewide has reached its highest level so far.

Wednesday morning COVID-19 update from the Virginia Department of Health:

• 3,773,586 doses of vaccine administered statewide, including 31,687 to Fauquier residents — up 523 from Tuesday.

The state has averaged 65,046 doses administered per day over the last week. So far, 29.5 percent of Virginians — and 29.3 percent of Fauquier residents — have received at least one dose.

• 1,346,564 Virginians fully vaccinated, including 11,639 in Fauquier — raising the county total by 3256 in a day.

So far, 16.3 percent of Fauquier residents have completed their vaccinations, compared with 15.8 percent statewide.

• 4,273 total cases in Fauquier since the pandemic began — up 6 from Tuesday morning’s report.

Fauquier public schools have 2 active cases among staff members and 2 among students as of Wednesday morning. The school system had 44 students and 4 staff members in quarantine as of Friday, March 26.

• 618,976 Virginia cases — up 1,035 since Tuesday.

The total includes 483,775 confirmed and 135,201 “probable” infections.

• 10,252 deaths statewide — up 10 from Tuesday.

Of the total fatalities, the health department classifies COVID-19 as the confirmed cause in 8,602 and “probable” in 1,650.

• 6,482,193 PCR diagnostic tests statewide — up 16,060 since Tuesday. Over the past seven days, 5.8 percent of those tests were positive.

Statewide hospitalizations for COVID-19 over the course of the pandemic totaled 26,455 as of Wednesday, up 88 since Tuesday.

But, the health department notes that its hospitalization figure — based on status at the time each case gets investigated — “underrepresents” the actual total.

Since the pandemic began, 51,481 “confirmed COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized and discharged,” according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

State hospitals housed 1,048 infected patients Wednesday — down 22 from Tuesday.

That put total Virginia hospitalizations during the pandemic at 52,529.

Hospitalizations peaked at 3,549 patients Wednesday, Jan. 13, according to the association.

Healthcare providers and laboratories report statistics to the state as of 5 p.m. each day. The health department updates its report the following morning.

One hundred and seventy-nine infected Fauquier patients have been hospitalized (up 4) and 62 have died (up 1) since the pandemic started.

In the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District, which includes Fauquier:

• 4,290 cases (up 23), 178 hospitalizations and 56 deaths in Culpeper.

• 2,005 infections (up 5), 83 hospitalizations and 35 deaths in Orange.

• 563 infections (up 3), 21 hospitalizations and 15 deaths in Madison.

• 320 cases (unchanged), 17 hospitalizations and 2 deaths in Rappahannock.

The district has 170 COVID-19 deaths, and 478 infected patients have been hospitalized during the pandemic.

The health department reported 107,872 PCR tests in the district so far. Over the last seven days, 6.9 percent of tests conducted in the five-county district were positive, trending upward.

• 71,411 in Fairfax County — up 87 since Tuesday.

• Prince William County, 41,934 — up 61.

• Virginia Beach, 33,166 — up 44.

• Chesterfield County, 25,379 — up 69.

• Loudoun County, 25,251 — up 30.

• Henrico County, 23,156 — up 10.

• City of Chesapeake, 19,503 — up 20.

• City of Norfolk, 16,133 — up 22.

• City of Richmond, 15,773 — up 77.

• Arlington County, 14,227 — up 39.

• City of Newport News, 12,687 — up 36.

• City of Alexandria, 10,940 — up 16.

• Stafford County, 10,150 — up 18. .

• City of Hampton, 9,523 — up 21.

• Spotsylvania County, 8,845 — up 5.

• City of Roanoke, 7,985 — up 6.

Nationwide as of Wednesday morning:

• 30,394,189 cases — up 61,831 from Tuesday morning.

• 550,998 deaths — up 925.

• 391.11 million tests conducted — up about 1.09 million.
