Best Bets: Warrenton 1st Friday, The Flying Circus

Warrenton’s Main Street will close to vehicles for the 1st Friday celebration which includes family activities, vendors and more.
The Flying Circus Airshow near Bealeton opens its 48th season Sunday.
Topping this weekend’s entertainment, Warrenton’s 1st Friday celebration returns for a new season. The event includes a variety of activities and vendors along Main Street, open to citizens.

Other weekend options in Fauquier include the popular Virginia Gold Cup horse races, two high school spring plays, the opening of The Flying Circus Airshow, the community theatre’s performance of “Big Fish” and a concert at Drum & Strum.

Warrenton 1st Friday
6 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 4
Main Street, Warrenton

Warrenton’s Main Street will close to vehicles for a spring celebration from First to Fifth Streets, hosted by Experience Old Town Warrenton. The vent includes a photo booth, beer garden, wine, discounts at businesses, vendors, “The Bottle Shop” band, free entry to the Fauquier History Museum and more. Free.

“Beauty and the Beast” at Liberty
7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 4-5
3 p.m. Sunday, May 6

Liberty students present their spring play Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast,” a love story based on the Broadway musical. $12 per person; $10 for students and staff.

“Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” at Fauquier High
7 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 4-5
3 p.m. Sunday, May 6

Fauquier High School theatre students present “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” about love in 1850s Oregon. Based on the 1954 musical film. Adults, $10; students, $5.

“Big Fish”

The Fauquier Community Theatre presents the opening weekend of the musical “Big Fish.” The play follows Edward Bloom, a story-telling traveling salesman whose larger-than-life stories thrill everyone. But, his adult son, Will, is determined to discover the “true” life story behind his father’s fantastical stories. Performances at Hope Church in Vint Hill near the community theatre. Adults, $20; children ages 3 to 18 and seniors 60+, $18.

Virginia Gold Cup Races
10 a.m. Saturday, May 5
5089 Old Tavern Road, The Plains

The 93rd running of the Virginia Gold Cup horse races takes place at Great Meadow. The event features eight steeplechase and flat races starting at noon, pari-mutuel betting, Jack Russell Terrier races, a hat contest, tailgating and more. General admission car pass admits up to six passengers, $100. Discount tickets for Fauquier residents until Friday, $75 each at Warrenton Gold Cup office. Tickets online.

Drum & Strum concert
8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 5
102 Main Street, Warrenton

Drum & Strum Music hosts Fast Edddie & the Slowpokes playing music inspired by classic blues, Motown and rock n’ roll. $20 per person. Children 12 and younger free with parent. Proceeds benefits music education and instruments for citziens.

The Flying Circus Airshow opening season
2 p.m. Sunday, May 6
5114 Ritchie Road, Bealeton

Expert pilots perform daring stunts in vintage biplanes, complete with a parachute jumper and wing walker at the 48th season of The Flying Circus Airshow. Shows take place every Sunday from May to October. Airplane rides usually available. Gates open at 11 a.m. Show begins at 2:30 p.m. Adults, $15. Children 5 to 12 years old, $7. Children 4 and younger, free.
