Both drivers killed when tractor-trailers hit head-on
The accident happened around 3 a.m. south of Bealeton.
Both drivers died in a head-on crash of two tractor-trailers on Route 17 in Southern Fauquier County early Thursday morning.
A southbound 2010 Kenworth, hauling general freight in a box trailer, ran off the right side of the road around 3 a.m., according to state police Sgt. Les Tyler.
“The driver overcorrected, came back onto the roadway and then went through the median into the northbound lanes, where it struck the second tractor-trailer,” Sgt. Tyler said.
The Kenworth overturned in the northbound lanes.
The second truck, a 2016 Freightliner, pulling a flatbed trailer load with lumber, ran off the right side of the highway and into trees, Sgt. Tyler said.
The accident happened near the intersection of Route 633 (Dyes Lane) between Bealeton and Goldvein.
Both drivers died at the scene.
Police identified the southbound truck’s driver as Brandon Michael Setter, 24, of Du Bois, Pa.
The northbound truck’s driver was by Tracy Lluan Hairston, 49, of Martinsville.
State Trooper C. R. Scally leads the investigation, along with the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team and Motor Carrier Safety Team. The Fauquier County Sheriff's Office, Virginia Department of Transportation and Fauquier County fire and rescue units also responded.
Both northbound lanes of Route 17 remained closed for several hours Thursday morning. VDOT detoured traffic to southbound Route 17, with one lane of traffic in each direction.
The investigation of what caused the accident continues, according to Sgt. Tyler.
