Changes coming to annual Warrenton Farmers Market

This season, the Warrenton Farmers Market will celebrate 41 years of providing fresh produce, baked goods and other items to the community.
It’s important for our town economy. I’m open to ideas of ways we can have an evening market as well.

Warrenton’s weekday farmers market will have a new location this year.

During the market’s annual meeting, vendors agreed to move the Wednesday market to the WARF (Warrenton Aquatics and Recreation Facility) parking lot.

In its 41st season, the market will operate Wednesdays and Saturdays from April to November. Vendors sell baked goods, vegetables, meat, jelly, flowers and other items.

Diana Callow, head vendor for the weekday market, supports the move.

“We would be highly visible,” Ms. Callow said during the Wednesday afternoon meeting.

Town Parks and Recreation Director Margaret Rice estimated that about 100 people per hour come to the WARF for classes on a Wednesday morning.

For the last several years, the weekday market took place at Fauquier Hospital.

“Over the years, we’ve seen the Wednesday market struggle,” town Planning Director Brandie Schaeffer said. Leaders hope to “revitalize it and give it new life” with the move.

The town planning department oversees the farmers market.

The Saturday market will remain at the South Fifth Street parking lot, but its space will double.

Last year the Saturday market had about 20 vendors.

But, if more vendors apply this year, the market also will occupy the adjacent public parking lot connecting South Fourth and South Fifth Streets.

Town manager Brannon Godfrey hopes Warrenton’s government can give the farmers market more support.

“It’s important for our town economy,” Mr. Godfrey said during Wednesday’s meeting. “I’m open to ideas of ways we can have an evening market as well.”

He and other town officials considered several alternative locations for the Saturday market, but it will remain on South Fifth Street this year.

The market has begun accepting applications for the 2017 season.

The Saturday market will open April 22 and the Wednesday market will open May 3.

The weekend market will operate 8 a.m. to noon April 22 to Nov. 18.

Wednesday’s market will operate 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 3 to Oct. 25.

Need weekday evening hours like 4-7 pm so those that work during the day will have an opportunity to get to the Farmer's Market. Can the hours at WARF be extended? It would be awesome to mix healthy exercise with healthy eating!
