Saturday morning COVID-19 update from the Virginia Department of Health:

403 total cases in Fauquier County since the pandemic began — up 2 from Friday’s report.

57,443 Virginia cases — up 650 since Friday. The total includes 54,953 confirmed and 2,490 “probable” infections.

1,607 deaths statewide — up 5 since Friday. Of the fatalities, the health department classified COVID-19 as the confirmed cause in 1,504 and “probable” in 103.

528,914 diagnostic tests statewide — up 18,984 since Friday. Over the past seven days, 7 percent of those tests were positive, continuing a downward trend.

Statewide hospitalizations for COVID-19 over the course of the pandemic totaled at 5,807 as of Saturday, up 10 from Friday.

But, the health department notes that its hospitalization figure — based on status at the time each case gets investigated — “underrepresents” the actual total.

Since the pandemic began, 7,607 “confirmed COVID-19 patients have been hospitalized and discharged,” according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

State hospitals housed 880 infected patients Saturday, up 18, according to the association.

That puts total Virginia hospitalizations during the pandemic at 8,487.

Virginia hospitalizations for COVID-19 peaked at 1,625 patients on May 8.

Healthcare providers and laboratories report statistics to the state as of 5 p.m. each day. The health department updates its report the following morning.

Twenty-six infected Fauquier patients have been hospitalized and 6 have died since the pandemic started.

• 42 infections, 4 hospitalizations and 1 death in Madison.

• 17 cases and 1 hospitalization in Rappahannock.

The district has 18 COVID-19 deaths, and 103 infected patients have been hospitalized during the pandemic.

The health department reported 10,703 diagnostic tests in the district so far, up 303 from
Friday. Over the last seven days, 5.5 percent of tests conducted in the five-county district were positive.
