Islamic butcher shop event goes on despite challenges

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy and civil rights organization, today thanked the Town of Warrenton for ending a police blockade of a Muslim-owned business so that local Muslims may carry out obligations associated with the end-of-Hajj Eid ul-Adha (‘festival of the sacrifice’) holiday that begins on Tuesday.

Dozens of customers waited in Tuesday morning’s downpour for the meat of freshly slaughtered goats and lambs at the Lebanese Butcher in Warrenton.

“It’s like our Christmas; it is important,” Ashraf Nubani, a Northern Virginia lawyer, said of the Islamic feast of Eid al-Adha.

Tradition calls for Muslims to humanely slaughter animals and share their meat with the needy, friends, neighbors and family.

“It honors the willingness of Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to God’s command,” Wikipedia explains. “Before Abraham could sacrifice his son, God provided a ram to sacrifice instead.”

The meat gets no fresher than at the small butcher shop behind Tom Frost Firestone on West Shirley Avenue.

But, the shop’s Aug. 19-21 holiday sale, which has taken place annually for more than two decades, almost got shut down this week.

Town Manager Brannon Godfrey on Aug. 10 informed the owners that because they failed to apply for a special events permit at least 90 days in advance, as Warrenton’s policy requires, the shop’s annual sale could not take place. The event — from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily — attracts hundreds of customers to the region’s only Islamic butcher shop.

Samir Rababeh, whose family owns the business, filed the permit application Monday, Aug. 6, according to town records. Mr. Godfrey informed him of the permit denial by phone four days later.

After prayers at an Annandale mosque on Friday, Aug. 17, Mr. Rababeh complained about the town’s decision to Nihad Awad, executive director of the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

The next day, town police blocked the butcher shop’s narrow, gravel driveway, which a farmer tried to enter with a truckload of live goats and lambs. He called Kheder Rababeh, 52, who started the business more than two decades ago. Mr. Rababeh called his lawyer.

CAIR on Monday sent Mr. Godfrey a letter, asking the town to “lift the current police blockade of the USDA-certified Lebanese Butchers facility so that those celebrating the end of the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) may carry out their constitutionally-protected religious obligations for the Eid ul-Adha (“festival of the sacrifice”) holiday beginning Tuesday, August 21.”

CAIR also issued a press release that drew coverage from D.C. TV stations, The Washington Post and CNN.

Working with CAIR and the business owners, Town Attorney Whit Robinson later Monday reached an agreement to allow the sale to proceed, with police-directed vehicle access to the tight parking lot outside the squat cinderblock butcher shop and a construction trailer that serves as its office.

Customers from the Washington, D.C., region lined up early to buy goats for $270 each and lambs for $280 apiece. Most knew nothing of the sale’s threatened cancellation.

“From my perspective, they had been given plenty of notice,” Mr. Robinson said Tuesday. “It happens year after year.”

The town attorney described the shop as “a legal, non-conforming use.” Warrenton has issued two notices of ordinance violations and has drafted others that municipal officials shared with the owners, who’ve repeatedly pledged to address the issues without follow-through, Mr. Robinson said.

The office trailer has not undergone inspection; the parking lot has no marked spaces or organization; building code and fire code violations exist, the town attorney said.

He produced documents and emails going back to Jan. 3 that detail the town staff’s efforts to resolve some of the issues.

All of town government’s concerns relate to “public safety,” Mr. Robinson said.

For years, town officials have received complaints about loose animals, odor and, during events such as this week’s festival, traffic and parking around the very tight, half-acre site.

The town frequently has threatened litigation to force compliance with its ordinances but never has gone that far, Mr. Robinson said.

“This year, we finally said, ‘We can’t do it any more’,” he said of the Aug. 10 notice of the special event permit denial.

CAIR Executive Director Awad said, “We’re going to be involved to make sure this has the right resolution” to prevent future conflict.

“I hope so,” Mr. Robinson said when told of CAIR’s pledge to help get the business into compliance with town ordinances.

Mr. Awad praised Mr. Robinson’s willingness to negotiate a compromise this time and to work toward a permanent solution.

Just after 6 p.m. Monday, Mr. Award’s organization issued a statement saying in part: “The Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim advocacy and civil rights organization, today thanked the Town of Warrenton, Va., for ending a police blockade of a Muslim-owned business so that local Muslims may carry out obligations associated with the end-of-Hajj Eid ul-Adha (‘festival of the sacrifice’) holiday that begins on Tuesday.”

As in years past, three town police officers Tuesday morning directed traffic, helping customers into and out of the butcher shop parking lot. They will stay on that task 12 hours a day during the event. The business will reimburse the town for traffic control.

“Mr. Robinson worked with me,” said Kheder Rababeh, the family patriarch whose mother emigrated from Lebanon to the U.S. in 1950.

For those who doubt Islam's real purpose in our country, here's just one example:

Muslims and terrorist front groups like CAIR, do not belong in non-Islamic countries.

•Islam's goal, stated many times by 'American' Muslim leaders, is to make all countries, including the USA, Islamic.

How many times do they have to prove it?

Apparently this was an important service provided by this shop as a part of a religous celebration observed by a minority group of American citizens,. If this shop had been closed, a lot of innocent people would be deprived of an important part of their ritual. If a majority group of American citizens could only buy a Christmas Turkey at one local shop, and that shop missed a filing deadline, wouldn't it be right to grant a one-time exception? Especially if this shop had been selling Turkeys for 20 years and missed a meaningless deadline through inadvertence. Mr. Robinson did the right thing in reaching a compromise on the filing issue this year. Now that this is done, Mr. Robinson needs to insist on compliance with the rule of law. Good job Mr. Robinson, now lets clean this up!

Madame, that is your opinion. However, this is not the time for American citizens to be frightened, but to be engaged in our community and our country; to seek out truth and beauty; and to be prepared for any eventuality; and to seek to fully understand, support and defend our U.S. Constitution (it is under siege by Bolshevik factions in our country who seek to live in world without the United States; without Virginia; without any sovereign borders, common English language, common culture and history, without our Bill of Rights, or without our Virginia Declaration of Rights).

Read extensively; learn as much as you can about the world around you; study the firsthand accounts of the past; protect our American history and monuments- all of it- and developed reasoned imaginations and perspectives of the future. With these attributes, you can accomplish anything devoid of fear and historic ignorance of the very worst kind. U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower often spoke of an informed citizenry, alert and knowledgeable, being the best defense against tyranny. President Eisenhower also noted, "The history of free men is never really written by chance but by choice- their choice." And, "History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid."

On a much larger scale, if one is sober enough to consider the unforgiving laws of economics in relation to decades of deficit spending and fiat currency issued at a truly incomprehensible scale since President Eisenhower's 1961 Farewell Address; over $220 Trillion in national debt; endless foreign wars; the breakdown of Judeo-Christian society, laws and order; the rise of anti-American, anti-Constitution Bolshevism across our land; the entrenched swamp of sewage that comprises so much of Washington, D.C. these days to include both major political parties; etc., that if you show me a person with a healthy mind and traditional American frame of reference, I will show you someone who is- and should be- genuinely concerned about our immediate future, and someone who is engaged and paying attention. Only the Fool goes around enjoying bread and circuses during a time like this- when in fact the same discussions that took place in the roadhouses and taverns in such places as Boston, Massachusetts and Charleston, South Carolina in 1775 and 1860 are taking place once again today. We are still struggling with the same issues- mostly economic and political; pro-Jeffersonian or pro-Hamiltonian in nature. So it is best to stay engaged and pay attention to what is unfolding before our eyes across our American continent.

Lastly, taking a longer view of world history, there is much we can learn from the sacrifices made by each prior generation of Americans and Virginians. Even those who died in great causes of liberty and independence never fail. If you have reason to believe our nation has already crossed the Rubicon and what has been lost of our former original American republic of sovereign, independent states bequeathed to us by our founders- since lost at Appomattox Courthouse and Durham Station- can never be regained under the present, massive Empire, we can still take heart in knowing that the ultimate revenge against tyranny is to lead as good and noble lives with our family, friends, neighbors and loved ones- for even the Christians led good and noble lives during the fall of ancient Rome.

Take care, all good wishes, and may America Bless God.

Well said Jeffersonian American,

Better to know our enemy than to only follow what the media says on them.
They have been a parasite to our country for a long time and are only gonna get worst until we drive them out.

@ Jeffersonian American

You need to get a life outside of politics. And perhaps need to be monitored by law enforcement. Your post is more frightening than anything I've seen/read about American/Islam relations ever.

Seriously - you need to seek therapy asap.

It appears one respondent is committing taqiyya with their “news flash” when they state, "CAIR is a non-profit based in Washington, D.C., hence it is an American organization which represents the interest of Americans." Clearly, the writer needs to clarify exactly what kind of Hyphenated Americans does CAIR represent? And precisely what kind of "American" ideals does CAIR, which has ties to terror-linked Hamas, represent?

Perhaps the recent article in American Thinker sums it up best: It cannot be denied that a Muslim plan to usurp American democracy has existed for decades. Careful scrutiny of this new wave of Muslim candidates yields a number with questionable backgrounds, motivations, and support groups, whose motives may be to implement the plan.

The plan to infiltrate and take over American democracy is explained in a 1987 strategic document, "An Explanatory Memorandum," written and approved by the Muslim Brotherhood, a political organization with ties to the fundamentalist terrorist organization Hamas. The Muslim Brotherhood has itself been designated a terrorist organization by seven nations, including Egypt, where the Brotherhood began in 1928. The memorandum calls for the elimination of the U.S. Constitution and its replacement with an Islamic government under sharia law. It spells out its "process of settlement" as a "Civilization-Jihadist Process" to eliminate and destroy Western civilization from within. It calls for the establishment of political organizations designed to train and promote the Muslim Brotherhood goal of establishing the Quran as the sole authority for the Muslim family, individual, community, and state.

Several organizations- primed specifically to assist, support, and increase the number of U.S. Muslim candidates for office- are affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood. They include the United States Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), Project Mobilize, Jetpac Inc., and Emgage.

The USCMO, a political party for Muslims and the first religion-based political party in U.S. history, formalized its commitment to Muslim candidates at its founding in 2014. Conspicuously absent from the USCMO <> website are references to U.S. laws or a pledge to uphold the Constitution.

Emgage's mission is to promote the political careers of "engaged Muslims." It was formerly known as Emerge USA, founded and led today by alumni from the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which has ties to Hamas. Emgage got its start raising campaign funds for former Democratic representative Keith Ellison, who supported racist and anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, worked on behalf of Nation of Islam, and received political contributions by CAIR officials. Emgage has held events at terror-linked mosques and seeks to "create an infrastructure of Muslim, Arab, and South Asian Americans who are empowered and can directly impact public policy."

These organizations are plainly dedicated not to American principles of democracy, but to Muslim ideals. Meanwhile, some of the recent Muslim candidates also hold questionable allegiances and motivations, specifically a Florida attorney general candidate and congressional candidates for Michigan and Minnesota.

By the way, in his independent comparative study of the world's religions over 200 years ago, Third U.S. President Thomas Jefferson had nothing good to say about Islam when he read the Koran and he made extensive critical handwritten notes in the margins in his personal copy (the same one now owned by the Library of Congress) and which was abused symbolically with the recent Capitol "swearing in" of U.S. Congressman Keith Ellison, second in command of the Democrat National Committee. Independent scholars who have examined President Jefferson's personal library copy have verified this. President Jefferson's decisive actions against the Barbary pirates further speak volumes to his very sage understanding of the so-called "religion of peace."

I would encourage the CAIR respondent to refrain from further abusing the Christian U.S. Presidents Jefferson and Madison; and the generations of Patriots who have paved the American Road before them- and all the rest of those Christian American founders who bequeathed to us our religious freedoms and our other constitutional rights to be embraced, strengthened and safeguarded- or respected- by future generations, originally intended as a new, largely European polity on the American continent. Please, stop the taqiyya- millions of Thinkiing Americans want no further expansion of dhimmitude here on Virginia and U.S. soil. Your example of CAIR taqiyya hurts your cause and your arguments.
Bonnie C. · August 23, 2018 at 8:18 pm
I would have felt a lot more charitable to the business - regardless of its religious affiliations - if they hadn't been given the chance to resolve this permit situation for several years now.

In this case I feel that they should have been shut down, as that apparently would have been the only thing that might have gotten them to wake up & start complying with the same rules & regulations that everyone else has to.

Kets get to the point , foreigners cry to a muslin group to get special treatment becuase they cannot follow the rules. If this was a Christian group it would have stayed a no .

The only reason it was allowed is becuase of fear of special interest groups playing the typical liberal card of race or discrimination.

Follow the rules made for everyone or go back where you came from.

No more special treatment, all these groups want to be equals and considered Americans , then follow the rules or get out .

We will not allow our country to be turned into a third world cesspool by cair and such groups pushing their garbage on us anymore.

We must stand up and fight for the America and forfathers and ancestors battled , fraught, and died for.

This new pc world is not it and must stop now !
Fred_GarvinJr · August 23, 2018 at 6:09 pm
Oh, good grief! Surely you don't have that little understanding of the situation. Yes, Americans who "cried" (in your vernacular) to an American group. Here's another newsflash for you: CAIR is a non-profit based in Washington, DC; hence, it is an American organization which represents the interests of Americans.

Do you truly not understand the difference between one's religion and their nationality? People can be both Muslim and American - just like they can be both Christian and American, Jewish and American, atheist and American, etc.

Have you ever heard of some fellow Virginians by the name of Jefferson and Madison? They had some really interesting thoughts on religious freedom. Somehow, I don't think they'd share your view of this stuff being "pc garbage."
No remorse · August 23, 2018 at 4:26 pm
Americans yet they cry to a muslin special interest group... if they are so American why cry to them about rules and laws ..

This is America and if they dont like our rules then dont let the door hit em on the way out.

So sick of this pc garbage and our country bending over for foreign interest groups.
Fred_GarvinJr · August 23, 2018 at 4:18 pm
"If this was an event for Americans..." Newsflash, No remorse, it IS an event for Americans. Faith and nationality are two separate (and very different) things. It's just one of the reasons why the First Amendment so precious.
LOUISE RUSNAK · August 23, 2018 at 1:05 pm
How can the Town of Warrenton & the county justify to the citizens changing the rules for 1 business and not for all the others that do not obtain their permits on time or correct their violations. Seems like they had to give in because of it being the Islamic Butcher and afraid of the publicity they would get if they denied the sales by the butcher to take place. Do they make so much money in revenue from this sale that they cannot afford to deny the permit.I wouldn't think so !!
No remorse · August 23, 2018 at 5:49 am
You nailed it.
We are need to fight this plague now and stop it feom taking over our county before we end up like the rest of northern Virginia.
Just another day of Americans being forced out and undercut by these cry babies who dont follow our rules.

Here is an idea, if they dont like our laws and rules oyr founding fathers put in place for us then they can get put amd go back to where they belong.

Its time we start worryinv about our own
Jeffersonian American · August 23, 2018 at 5:06 am
It is fair, after repeated issues of non-compliance with local ordinances; continued documentation of violations of safety and zoning restrictions; and at best, a mostly permanent, foul stench for all local residents of Warrenton and passing drivers with their windows rolled down (or kept rolled up- magnitudes worse during the warmer 6 months of each year- enough of a bad stench to keep many customers away from the local GMC dealership, the local Firestone Tire dealer, the local firearms dealer and hurting foot traffic for other nearby business establishments for many years now)- why not demand our County and Town Officials revisit how and why this local business was approved over 20 years ago; why not revisit the reasons for this specific business being allowed to continue (unlike other repeat violators and repeat offenders in our local business community) to operate without forced compliance, fines and shut-down of all operations on all days of the calendar year they remain out of compliance? What makes this particular business so special that it is allowed such special exemptions far, far, far beyond what would otherwise be normal and reasonable and accountable for all other citizens and businesses of Warrenton and Fauquier County? Why would the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR) feel the need to intervene in a local town issue with a massive, regional news press release for intimidation?

Thinking Citizens know the reasons why- and it is very ugly and frightening indeed when one realizes CAIR apparently runs our local Government; and decides what laws, ordinances and zoning restrictions shall be enforced or not enforced with a little intimidation and regional and national negative attention lobbied against them. With help from a compliant media, Sharia Law proponents have reached critical mass to win statewide and congressional seats. Nearly all- if not all- major party candidates in Virginia state and national offices accept Islamic funding in recent decades. It's a creeping threat to our Virginia and U.S. Constitution, the documents essential to holding our increasingly diverse population together as a nation. Sharia Law is not remotely compatible with our Virginia and U.S. Constitutions. Yet, it is apparently compatible for our local Warrenton and Fauquier Government to obey and capitulate to threats and intimidation by a thoroughly discredited national organization, rather than the rule of law and local zoning ordinances the rest of we Virginia citizens are subject to (and were once taught, the American Way, to have respect for beginning at home and later, in elementary school civics lessons). Complying with local ordinances and laws or amending them through the local process is a Virginia and American constitutional, self-government tradition spanning over 240 years. Either we have an effective, impartial, fact-based, objective local Government and local zoning ordinance requirements strictly enforced or adjudicated- or we have Creeping Sharia. This is a textbook case of Creeping Sharia. And you all have been forewarned. Wake Up America, Wake Up Fauquier.

Sad that Warrenton had to bow down and give special treatement to this event because some pc group complains.

If this was an event for Americans i am sure it would have stayed a No like it should have been for them.

If you dont follow the rules you get no reward .
