Since business closings and layoffs started because of the COVID-19 pandemic eight weeks ago, 4,222 Fauquier residents have filed first-time applications for unemployment insurance benefits.

While the pace of applications has slowed, 268 county residents filed new claims last week, the Virginia Employment Commission reported Thursday.

That represents a decline 22 percent from the prior week, when 344 new applications came from Fauquier.

The unprecedented spike in joblessness started the week of March 21.

The first-time unemployment benefits claims from Fauquier by week:

• 268 — week ending Saturday, May 9.

• 344 —May 1.

• 425 —April 25.

• 497 — April 18.

• 652 — April 11.

• 1,029 — April 4.

• 753 — March 28.

• 254 — March 21.

The county has a workforce estimated at 31,483.

Fauquier residents also filed 2,501 continuing claims last week — up 2.3 percent from the previous week, according to the VEC. (Unemployed workers must file each week to keep their benefits coming).

New and continuing claims totaled 3,169 as of May 9. That would put the county’s unemployment rate at 10 percent.

Statewide, new claims of 52,139 last week represented a 12.6-percent decrease from the previous week.

But, continuing claims increased more than 4 percent to 392,673.

Nationwide, another 3 million people filed for unemployment insurance benefits last week. Since mid-March, applications in the U.S. have totaled 36.5 million, according to the Department of Labor.
