Lord Fairfax Community College to change name

Click above to watch Lord Fairfax Community College President Kim Blosser address the name change.
I said many times that his name is just not good enough for us.
— LFCC President Kim Blosser
Renaming Process
The college has formed a task force to develop criteria, solicit ideas for a new name and present recommendations to the board.

The board hopes to make a recommendation for a new name to state officials this summer.

Lord Fairfax Community College will change its name, that of a 17th-century colonial land baron who owned slaves.

The college’s 14-member board, which includes two Fauquier representatives, voted Feb. 4 to make the change.

“I said many times that his name is just not good enough for us,” LFCC President Kim Blosser said in a video address to the staff and students. “We are much better than what that name would show.”

Founded in 1969 at Middletown (Frederick County), the college has expanded with satellite campuses just south of Warrenton and in Luray.

The State Board for Community Colleges in July asked all of its institutions to review their names as similar efforts spread across the nation — especially Virginia — in the wake of George Floyd’s murder and the Black Lives Matter movement’s rise.

LFCC’s effort included “six months of study, focus group discussions and the results of a brand research study,” Dr. Blosser said.

“The process has been comprehensive, disciplined, inclusive, deliberative and, above all else, respectful of our responsibility for the history and future of the college,” said Vice Chairman Mike Wenger (Rappahannock County). “Hard-working groups reached out to constituents, dug into the records, read history, gathered data and debated issues.

“We considered the overall college branding with an eye to the future. The process invited deliberations about the values we want to inculcate, the focus we hope the college brand projects, and the breadth of community-reach we want to facilitate. Though this decision wasn’t easy, it was in many ways clear.”

Born in England, Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron (1639-1781), came to own the Northern Neck Proprietary, five million acres that stretched from the Chesapeake Bay to the outskirts of what would become Pittsburgh.

Lord Fairfax bought and sold slaves who worked on the 30 farms that created much of his wealth. He died in Virginia and lies in a Winchester grave.

Fairfax County, the City of Fairfax and thousands of businesses and institutions bear his name.

“While remembering and honoring the history and successes of LFCC during its first 50 years, the Lord Fairfax Community College Board has accepted the responsibility and opportunity to move forward with renaming the college to reflect the vision and mission for the future for our communities and our students,” Chairwoman Pam McInnis (Warren County) said.

The Fauquier Campus opened in 1989. The first classes took place in a renovated barn that real estate investor Bob Sowder of Catlett donated for a joint effort of LFCC and Germanna Community College.

LFCC plans to adopt a new name later this year.

“As we develop our new strategic plan and look forward to our next 50 years, we will find a name that better suits our vision of an inclusive, equitable learning environment for every student, one that improves their economic mobility and supports the economic development of the communities we serve,” Dr. Blosser said. “And we will involve our employees, our students, and our community members in this process; we will do this together.”

Correct attitude is the key to success and it seems to me that the right development of your brand. I recommend looking at a few educational resources https://edubirdie.com/conclusion-generator for generating an action plan correctly. These are well-known brands that are used all over the world. Educational content must meet international quality standards.

Changing historical names in our present era to erase notable figures of the past merely because some aspect of their careers is offensive to the Modern Left is part of the Long March through the academic institutions of the past half-century. This latest example from the Lord Fairfax Community College Board is called in the academy "advocacy scholarship" which is more interested in changing perceptions and behavior than in truth. We have seen many of these ideologically driven things come and go in the academy. Solid scholarship and truth will eventually out, but it will be a struggle. The wealthy Lord Fairfax was a notable figure as viewed in the context of the time he lived in with many good qualities as well- incidental to the fact he owned slaves. George Washington's life-long friendship with and sponsorship by Lord Fairfax was instrumental in the young man's rise to political and social prominence; and ultimately as the leader of our American Continental Army and first U.S. President who refused to become a King, dictator or tyrant. And if we follow the Lord Fairfax Community College Board's same standard today, are we to erase the names the documented 952 Freemen (free blacks) who owned slaves by 1830 in Virginia?

Cleanth Brooks said that Northern literature lacks greatness because it tends to be sentimental, ideological and pornographic. All three trade on the surface or aspects of things to stimulate emotion, instead of penetrating to the heart of things. When you do that you confront original sin as well as human goodness.

#18: (Honorable Mention) While not quite a hypocrisy the irony is too good to ignore. Alohaexpress claimed that educators are a waste of space and oxygen. But then the next day a teacher took him (or her?) to school for making other claims that couldn’t be proven. Who is the real moron? Lol thanks for the laughs.

#17: jeffersonianamerican talks about how we are all one race, the human race. Three cheers for that. But he still uses half a million words to explain why we all ought to ignore the fact that our society continues to celebrate humans who owned other humans.

I plan to point out at least 2,021 examples of hypocrisy from those posting on Fauquiernow by the end of this year.
Savefauquiercounty2019 · February 20, 2021 at 4:01 pm
Another gripe Americans should have is how colleges take state and federal funds, and overcharge. Many students end up graduating with a useless degree. Americans spend enormous amount of taxes on schools and end up not passing kids through that should not have graduated. They get passing grades without working for it. When they get to a real job...they can't handle life.
Jeffersonian American · February 19, 2021 at 11:17 pm
As evident at Lord Fairfax Community College, America is in the midst of a Raging Culture War, ongoing for several decades now in its planned wholesale destruction.

Dr. Donald Livingston notes 2020 has been a tumultuous year. Monuments to our great American founders and other great American historic figures, long untouchable are desecrated or torn down merely because some aspect of their careers is offensive to the modern Left. Notable colonial figures within the American colonies from The Mother Country are even lower on the 21st Century deplorables list. The Old Left had a plan for the future- it was a bad plan and cost the lives of some 100 million worldwide in the 20th century; yet it was a concrete plan to which many people (with not entirely unworthy motives) could give their misplaced allegiance. But Dr. Livingston observes the destruction of the contemporary left is narcissistic and therapeutic, and the Democrat mayors and governors who allowed rioters to wreck, burn, steal and bully look more like mental health officials allowing a patient to work out his or her rage than officials sworn to protect life, liberty and property.

The driving force behind this self-induced rage is Cultural Marxism, the thesis that America is, and has always been, systemically a white supremacist society. Dr. Livingston notes the key word here is "systemic." Livingston states a human society is not a "system," but a historic evolving thing with no discernable beginning or end. Yet the Cultural Marxist hardens a society into an abstraction and teaches that all attempts to reform the system (ending slavery, segregation, affirmative action, etc.) are merely ways of reinforming systemic white supremacy. The distinguished academic further notes that means the thesis admits of no public test and so tells us nothing about blacks, whites, other races and their political relations. Livingston clearly explains scientific claims about the world are convincing only because they can be tested.

Livingston observes the Cultural Marxist is obsessed with race. In 1969, Susan Sontag, a New York Journalist, wrote that "the white race is the cancer of human society." Soon after, elite universities began programs of "white studies," teaching that America is systemically a white racist society. While Livingston writes he never thought something so absurd as Cultural Marxism would ever have legs beyond a small circle of academics, it has taken 50 years, but it is now standard fare in colleges and universities, elementary schools, mainline churches, and the contemporary U.S. Armed Forces. Livingston notes young people raised in conservative and Christian homes, now lecture their parents about their "white privilege." Those who do not accept the ideology and yet breathe its fumes are often morally disarmed and remain silent. Dr. Livingston, a Emeritus Professor of Philosophy and National Endowment for the Humanities Fellow, also recently noted Cultural Marxism has been more effective in Europe than in America; and that a civilization so demoralized cannot long survive. He contends the Southern tradition has a greater immunity to ideology than the rest of America, but the way of life and education that sustained that immunity has eroded.

The debilitating, self-destructive Cultural Marxism which runs amok within the Lord Fairfax Community College Board of Directors demonstrates our saner Fauquier and Virginia citizens of all backgrounds of the one common race- the human race- must all take on the uphill task of repairing that education.
CP63 · February 19, 2021 at 1:56 pm
I support the change. Virginia is a great state with a great future, but it is long past time to admit racism is wrong and to commit to a more fair and just future. That is clearly the right thing to do for all Virginians.

Will the good, holier than thou professors bless out Obama and other democrats leaders who hang out with Louis Farrakan, a known antisementic? Will you rip Oprah' s book list down since she hangs out with him too? What about the Loundon County delegate who is pushing for BDS to help destroy Israel? Are any of your professors prejudiced or racist's against any group of people or are you just doing what BLM requests?
Savefauquiercounty2019 · February 19, 2021 at 4:16 am
Dear Professor Blosser,
We are fully aware the AFT, President Weingarten is a socialist and uses teacher's and other professionals union dues to place socialists in office. Just recently on Jan 23, 2020 she twitted for colleges and universities not to hire Trum Appointees. This is the highest level of discrimination on record towards a group of people. Now the intentions of colleges and universities is to remove names off of buildings of anyone associated with owning slaves. As you rip history apart in the USA, should you not start with the professors you hire? There are 197 countries in this world that use their children for slave labour. If following the rules and regulations and policies of the US labor board it has never been ethical on any of our part to purchase items because they are cheap from these countries. So please get rid of any and all classroom supplies that you have purchased from coutnries that use slaves or don't feed their citizens or they behave so badly people flee their countries. Just because you never had a plantation or own slaves, you madam are just as bad if you have purchased items made by slaves. Let's call the college professors out. Let us turn the tables on you now. If your home was made by the modern day slaves, let us call them illegal immigrants for the sake of any arguments...should you not demolish your home now? Show us the way to a stellar core. You self rightous professors live a charm life. Why not spend you many vacations and extra hours (not having to work 50 to 60 hours a week) and go to these horrible countries and work. Change their culture too. Why not bless out all the dishonest businesses that hire illegals right here in Fauquier County. They have created criminal competition and the honest American businesses have struggled. THe honest business man or woman, no matter their color can compete. They follow US Labor Laws. Start vetting every professor not just the Trump appointees and determine if they have illegals in their homes as their slaves. You and the rest of the professors are nothing but hypocrites. Next after you change the name of the schools, and participate in destructing America go after every leader in our history that did not care for homo sexuals. Rip their statues and names off of buildings, libraries etc. The next time you drive across Woodrow Wilson bridge thin about that name too. Shame on you. Go after the modern day slave owners too. We'd like to see you clean house, start with your own office and every item purchased from a foreign country that doesn't enforce child labor laws or doesn't have them, pitch it out. Next develop a course on how to survive successfully financially when competing with slave ownes.

Aloha - You said that you knew this was happening, so I was asking you!

I know we have teachers who are working from home, but as previously stated they are all older and have health issues, so they would already be in Phase 1B. Unless you are holding back some key piece of evidence, I'll assume this really is the case.

Justanopinion - You're right. How did we end up in an attack on public teachers in general on a story about a community college name change?!

Ask your buddy Dave Jeck how many teachers who opted out of in classroom duties for 2021 school year received covid vaccines (ahead of current Senior Citizen tranche) recently.

Go ahead. Let us know what he says.
J Obrokta · February 18, 2021 at 6:43 pm
Aloha,

The wait for a vaccine has certainly been too long and frustrating for many who need it, no argument there.

But then you say awful things about my colleagues, and I have no proof that any of that is true, and so our back and forth continues. If we do have teachers who have unnecessarily jumped to the front while shirking their duties then share your evidence and I will join you in condemning their behavior.

You are misinformed. I am well aware of covid protocols and cadence for vaccinations.

You have school employees who got vaccinations who have no intention of teaching in person but who are jumping line in front of vulnerable seniors who are panicking at getting needed shots. There are a large number of Seniors in Fauquier County who have not even received a call back after repeated requests to get on a vaccination list, yet entitled school employees get red carpet while eating French Fries on their couches at home while posting to Facebook all day long.

No need to talk. Please educate our children. Can you come to school and do that Jim?
Jerome Fields · February 18, 2021 at 5:56 pm
Fauquier is OUT, turns out he owned slaves too. Time to change the name of our county?

"During 1767 Fauquier suffered several bouts of illness and was unable to work for weeks at a time. He wrote a new will in which he lamented that his lifestyle in Virginia required him to own slaves, and he stipulated that his twelve adult slaves be allowed to choose their new masters and that female slaves not be separated from their children. "

COPD brought on by what exactly? Smoking? Asbestos exposure?

Fauquier Community College works for me. Does anyone know if Francis Fauquier did anything untoward in the past?
J Obrokta · February 18, 2021 at 4:57 pm
Aloha,

Obviously you have some things that you are either confused or upset about. Rather than playing the back and forth all day here, get in touch with me directly and I'm sure we can have a much more productive conversation.

I'm not a vaccine rollout expert, but I think the 75 year old widow you refer to is in the same phase for vaccination that teachers are in (Phase 1b). You seem to be sure that we have young and healthy teachers working from home who are getting unnecessary vaccines. If that is true it is news to me. We have a handful of teachers at Liberty who have special permission to teach from home but each of them has literally been teaching since before I was born. So they would qualify for this same round based on their age and health issues anyway.

I'm just excited to think that with teachers getting vaccinated one of the obstacles to increasing the number of students in classrooms is getting solved.

Best regards,
Jim OBrokta

Aloha,

While it is true that I live for lesson planning (last night I was literally just finishing a new lesson on the history of disease in the ancient world when I decided to catch up on the local news here), as an educator I also do my best to make a little time to help our community understand what we are doing.

Obviously you aren't interested in being a part of the system, and that is fine. I'd still be happy to help you better understand what we do. My offer will always stand if you ever want to join me in real life for some honest observations and conversations in my classroom.

Alohaexpress · February 18, 2021 at 12:00 pm
Jim Obrokta-

A couple of observations and suggestions for you.

Shouldn't you be doing lesson plans, grading papers, or otherwise helping advance your students, instead of trying to recruit for the bureaucratically bloated school system which is systematically failing our students and taxpayers? Believe the former is in your job description and is what we taxpayers pay you for?

Collectively, the teachers and more so the administration, have failed Fauquier County by preventing in classroom learning. Further,do you feel it is morally and ethically proper for Fauquier County school employees to get vaccine shots when they have opted out for in classroom participation this year and have no intention of returning to classroom before 2022 school year, yet 75 year old vulnerable seniors are still waiting in line for shots?

Why don't the teachers (and there are quite a few) who abhore those fake disengenuous fellow teachers and administrators who are failing students, get together and push for change?

Maybe you could focus your efforts there? What do you say Jim? Do you have the stones to lead that charge ?

I was just thinking more on this and came to the realization that even if you wanted to join our ranks, for reasons of remuneration you may not be able to switch from a private sector job to a teaching job.

If that is the case, but you are still interested in seeing the good work that is being done with our community's tax dollars, please know you are welcome to spend a day with me and my students. Aloha!

Fauquier County Schools are always interested in capable people from the real world who are interested in making the change to teaching. I know several teachers who switched from private sector jobs into teaching through the "career switcher" program for certification. They didn't all make it in the end, as teaching has plenty of its own unique challenges, but for someone like you who knows how hard the real world can be we could definitely benefit from your experience!

John Q -- Malcom X was wrong when it came to race. He did a lot of good work for human rights in his later years, but early on he believed that the black race was a pure race (even a superior race when he was with the Nation of Islam) and that whites and blacks should be kept separate. He was just as much of a racist as the white people of his time. By today's standards he probably shouldn't have all the schools named after that he does.

As long as we continue to put people in racial categories based on skin color or ethnicity, there will always be racism. One day maybe we will wake up and realize that the human genome is so integrated that the concept of race makes no sense and there is only the human race. In the meantime I hope we can strive to treat each other with the equal respect each of us deserves.

The virtuous woke yoga practicing Lord Fairfax Community College Board members advocating this type of political correctness just don't seem to understand. They are the worst enemy of the communities and students they serve.

Malcolm X was a Muslim minister and human rights activist. Born in 1925, he met his death at the hands of an assassin in 1965. Malcolm X was a courageous advocate for black civil rights. Malcom X famously stated the following:

"The worst enemy that the Negro have is this white man that runs around here drooling at the mouth professing to love Negros and calling himself a liberal, and it is following these white liberals that has perpetuated problems that Negros have. If the Negro wasn't taken, tricked or deceived by the white liberal, then Negros would get together and solve our own problems. I only cite these things to show you that in America, the history of the white liberal has been nothing but a series of trickery designed to make Negros think that the white liberal was going to solve our problems. Our problems will never be solved by the white man."

I feel like I speak for everyone when I say this... We should all just change our names. I mean cmon, what's in a name? It's just a bunch of letters and syllables, and if you say your name really slow, honestly, does it sound normal, even to you? Do it in the shower... Quietly. Really whisper it to yourself. I've found that my name is just weird. And if I change my name, maybe the creditors can't find me then! There has to be an upside to all of this.
