Snow drifted across roads in The Plains around 9 a.m. Thursday, March 22, the day after a rare spring storm.

Trees coated in ice sparkled as the sun emerged and the great melt began along Route 17 north of Warrenton.

Parts of Northern Fauquier received about 6 inches of snow Wednesday, with approximately 3 inches in the southern end, according to Fauquier’s fire and rescue department.

In Opal, the National Weather Service recorded 2.5 inches of snow.

Fauquier schools remain closed today, Thursday, March 22.

This school year, students have missed seven days of class due to inclement weather:

• Friday, Jan. 5

• Monday, Jan. 8

• Monday, Feb. 5

• Wednesday, Feb. 7

• Friday, March 2

• Wednesday, March 21

• Thursday, March 22

Students have already used up the four “makeup days” built into the school calendar and will attend class Wednesday and Thursday, May 30-31.

To make up the most recent snow days, the system will use “banked hours” of instruction.

By now, students have spent enough time in class to meet the state minimum of 990 hours a year. “Banked hours” would work for three more days of school closures this term.

Fauquier County Government also closed Wednesday.
