Marshall Ford seeking OK for a bigger new building

Proposed Nissan dealership building would total approximately 16,200 square feet. Both buildings would face East Main Street. A carwash would serve both dealerships. Two entrances on Old Stockyard Road would provide access to site.

• Next: BZA will conduct a public hearing on application in July or August.
Leckner Ford of Marshall’s owner plans to move the century-old dealership to a new and much bigger building.
Carl Leckner seeks special permit approval from the Fauquier County Board of Zoning appeals to construct an approximately 21,600-square-foot showroom and service center on 8.1 acres at East Main Street and Old Stockyard Road.
The showroom and offices now occupy a two-story, 4,800-square-foot stucco building at 8332 Main St. The dealership services vehicles in a separate building.
Filed last Thursday, the special permit application also calls for an approximately 16,200-square-foot structure that potentially would house a Nissan dealership. A planned carwash would serve the dealerships’ and service customers’ vehicles.
Open daily, the dealership would generate 2,500 vehicle trips per week, with 800 on Saturday and 400 on Sunday, according to the application.
Both dealership buildings would front East Main Street. Two Old Stockyard Road entrances would provide access to the site.
Mr. Leckner could not be reached for comment for this article.
“They want to modernize and upgrade,” said Jim Carson, owner of Warrenton-based Carson Land Consultants, which helped prepare the application. “It’s exciting. Marshall Ford is the oldest, continuous operating Ford dealership in the country.”
The dealership opened Nov. 23, 1915.
While the proposed site has commercial zoning, the use requires special permit approval.
The company submitted the application in time for a BZA public hearing July 6.
But, a hearing “probably” will be postponed to Aug. 3 to give county planning staff more time to discuss, among other things, “aesthetics and layout,” with him and other Leckner representatives, Mr. Carson said.
The staff wants to discuss comprehensive plan issues, technical concerns and scheduling, county Senior Planner Adam Shellenberger said in an email.
“I think there’s going to be a little bit more work to be done,” Mr. Carson said. “I think it will be more presentation to the street, trying to create something nice along Old Stockyard Road.”
Given adjoining uses — offices to the west, Hagerstown Block Co. to the north and the Tractor Supply store and the Marshall shopping center to the east — Mr. Carson considers the dealership project “very compatible.”
“It’s not like it’s surrounded by parkland,” the planning consultant said. “It’s basically surrounded by similar, commercial-type uses.”
For an undisclosed sum, Mr. Leckner last October bought the Marshall dealership from David Baird and Thomas O’Brien, who had owned the dealership since 1989.
When the Oakton resident purchased the business, it employed seven; he planned to increase that number to 25.
Founded in July 2015, his company has six other dealerships in Ellicott City, Md., King George, Stafford and Woodstock.

So what happens to the original Marshall Ford location? Isn't the point that THAT is the oldest continuous operating Ford dealership location in the country? If it moves to a shiny new building the point kinda gets lost doesn't it? Technically maybe not - but I'd hate to see it get torn down and a corner pharmacy go in there a just the cornerstone get moved to the new location and put in a glass case a piece be shipped to the Ford headquarters with a photo of the original building - "Here stood the oldest continuous...Marshall, VA - 102 years" But I don't live in Marshall - maybe they could use a corner pharmacy. Hate to see piece of our history get eaten up. Maybe the Fauquier Heritage Society next door needs more space and they could join with the Fauquier Historical Society in the Old Jail Museum and the Ford guy would like a write off to donate the property with all the expenses he's about to incur..... John Marshall Museum corner would be kinda nice too...thanks for listening.
