Morrisville man commits suicide in regional jail

Jeremiah D. Gibson, 42, received a 25-year sentence, with all but eight years suspended, last month in Fauquier County Circuit Court.
A Morrisville man, serving an eight-year sentence for an armed standoff with police, committed suicide last week in the Northwest Regional Jail near Winchester.

Jailers found Jeremiah Gibson, 42, hanging from a bed sheet tied to the top bunk in his cell at 1:57 a.m. Friday, The Winchester Star reported.

Fauquier County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey W. Parker last month sentenced Mr. Gibson to 25 years, suspending all but eight.

Judge Parker also order him — after his release — to remain on probation for 10 years and to receive mental health treatment.

Mr. Gibson in August pleaded guilty to five counts of firing a weapon at law enforcement officers. During a standoff at his home in March, he shot at a state police armored vehicle with five state troopers inside.

Regional jail staff members cut down the sheet in Mr. Gibson’s cell and started CPR. He died later at Winchester Medical Center.

Fauquier authorities initially charged him with five counts of attempted capital murder. The commonwealth’s attorney office later reduced the charge to shooting at police officers.

The regional jail staff in March placed Mr. Gibson on suicide watch after making statements about harming himself, Superintendent James F. Whitley said.

But, the jail’s mental health staff later cleared the inmate, according to Mr. Whitley.

Sounds like a very troubled man. Very sad. Glad he didn't hurt anybody but himself. I hope he's found his peace now.
