Outdoor and envionmental activities among best bets

Celebrations of the environment and the great outdoors take place this weekend with throughout Fauquier. Events also include history and airplanes.

Student and community stages will offer entertainment as well.

Park’s fifth anniversary
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 10
Northern Fauquier Community Park, 4155 Monroe Parkway, Marshall

The Fauquier County Parks and Recreation Department will host a day of discovery at the Northern Fauquier Community Park. Celebrating five years since the park opened, events of the day will include children’s performer Uno Dos Tres Con Andres, a performance by the Fauquier Community Band, softball and rugby demonstrations, dog obedience demos, children’s games, crafts, food and more. Women Can Fly
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10
Warrenton-Fauquier Airport, 5075 Airport Road, Midland

Designed to introduce aviation to more women and girls (ages 8 and older), the Women Can Fly program includes displays, special guests, simulation opportunities, pre-flight briefings and a free flight in a general aviation aircraft. Free. 540-522-6115

Science/Sustainable Energy Art Expo
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10
Fauquier High School, 705 Waterloo Road, Warrenton

Stressing environmental education, the free community event will feature exhibits, presentations and workshops by schools, businesses, groups and individuals.Exhibits and participating organizations will include the FHS geothermal mechanical room, beekeeping, building energy conservation systems, Women for Conservation, Top 25 Fauquier Eco-Friendly Energy saving entities, the Fauquier County Department of Environmental Services, the Piedmont Environmental Council and the John Marshall Soil and Water Conservation District.

Early Bird Hike
6 to 9 a.m. Sunday, May 11
Sky Meadows State Park, 11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane

Sky Meadows State Park will be open early for bird watching. Meet at the Lost Mountain trailhead. $5 for parking. 540-592-3556

War of 1812 Commemoration
9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 10
The Fauquier History Museum at the Old Jail, 10 Ashby St., Warrenton

Events of the day include a lecture series in the old courthouse, demonstrations, artifacts, a scavenger hunt, children’s puppet theater, and more. Free. 540-347-5525

“Once Upon a Mattress”
7:30 p.m. Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10
2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 11
Fauquier High School auditorium, 705 Waterloo Road, Warrenton

The Fauquier High School theater department presents its spring play. Adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea,” the production is a musical comedy. Tickets: $5 for students and $7 for adults. 540-422-7325.

“Little Women”
8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 9-10
2 p.m. Sunday, May 11
Fauquier Community Theater, 4225 Aiken Drive, Vint Hill

The Fauquier Community Theater presents "Little Women." Based on Louisa May Alcott’s own family experiences and novel, this musical version follows the adventures of Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy March as they grow up in Civil War America. Tickets: Adults, $18. Students and Seniors 60 and up, $16.
