Fauquier residents get discount for Gold Cup

The 91st running of the Virginia Gold Cup will feature eight races Saturday, May 7, at Great Meadow near The Plains.

• What: 8 steeplechase and flat races.

• When: Saturday, May 7.

• Where: Great Meadow, near The Plains.

• Gates open: 10 a.m., with first race at noon.

• Tickets: $85 for general admission (up to six people); Fauquier residents can get $20 discount.

• Also: Entertainment, terrier races, pari-mutuel betting, food and beverages (for sale).

• Crowd: Typically about 50,000 spectators.

• Sponsor: Virginia Gold Cup Association in Warrenton.
Fauquier County residents may purchase discounted general admission passes for the 91st annual International Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase races Saturday, May 7, at Great Meadow, near The Plains.

Those who live in Fauquier may purchase up to two tickets for $65 each — a $20 discount. Each ticket will admit one vehicle with up to six people.

The discounted tickets required a valid ID and may be purchased at the Virginia Gold Cup office at 90 Main St. in Warrenton. The Gold Cup office will be open until 7 p.m. Friday, May 6.

Normal office hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

The Virginia Gold Cup will feature eight races, starting at noon. Pari-mutuel betting again will be available. But, this year, betting will require cash. There will be no option for credit card use.

The May 7 schedule:

10 a.m. — Gates open to the public at Great Meadow.

11 a.m. — Jack Russell Terrier races.

11:45 a.m. — Opening ceremony.

Noon — First race, Sport of Kings Maiden Hurdle.

12:40 p.m. — Second Race, The Steeplethon.

1:20 p.m. — Third Race, The Orlando Innovation Allowance Hurdle.

2 p.m. — Fourth Race, The Zeke Ferguson Memorial.

2:15 p.m. — Hat Contest begins at paddock

2:45 p.m. — Fifth Race, The Virginia Gold Cup.

3:30 PM — Sixth Race, Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association Allowance Flat.

4 p.m. — Seventh Race, Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association Allowance Flat.

4:30 p.m. — Eighth Race, Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association Open Flat.

6 p.m. — Gates close.

Where in the heck is coverage of the Gold Cup? Who won the races, stories about horses and trainers, who won the Gold Cup? Honestly, FauquierNowNews is seriously lacking, and to think the horse industry is the largest industry in Fauquier County.
