Rt. 29 detours begin July 8 for “Cut the Hills”

Most northbound traffic will use Route 17 to Interstate 66, according to the plan, which includes temporary truck bans on secondary roads in the area.

A portion of northbound Routes 15/29 near New Baltimore will close at noon Monday, July 8, for three weeks.

Drivers “should prepare now for a detour and likely delays during the closure of the highway’s northbound lanes for safety improvements,” Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Lou Hatter said. “The project will regrade the northbound lanes and remove two hills that have contributed to significant crashes on that busy section of highway just south of the Prince William County line.”

The closure will affect the morning rush for the first time on Tuesday, July 9.
The highway’s northbound lanes will close from just north of the entrance to Battlefield Baptist Church to just south of the Vint Hill Road (Route 215) intersection, a distance of about one-half mile.

Northbound traffic will detour using Route 17 north from Warrenton to Interstate 66 at Marshall, then using I-66 east to Gainesville.

The closure will not affect southbound traffic and drivers will be able to turn onto and from Route 215 during the closure. Access to private entrances, including the Battlefield Baptist Church, will be maintained during the closure.

VDOT suggests allowing at least 30 additional minutes for commuting or other trips during the peak morning travel hours. Commuters for whom telework or an alternate work schedule are options may wish to consider those during the closure period.

During the project, tractor-trailers and other trucks with more than three axles will be banned from Old Tavern Road, Blantyre Road, Beverley’s Mill Road, Broad Run Church Road and Rogues Road between Dumfries and Vint Hill roads.

VDOT also has set up five temporary cameras to monitor the detour.

“There is a lot of concern for the detour routes and other secondary roadways that will be affected by this closure for the next three weeks, until August 2,” Fauquier sheriff’s Sgt. James Hartman said. “The sheriff’s office has a comprehensive plan in place with the goal of monitoring these detour routes and secondary roadways and keeping them open and safe.”

The sheriff’s office has assigned six deputies to patrol the detour routes, along with three state troopers on special assignment during the project.

Chemung Contracting Corp. of Mitchells will “cut the hills” under a $3.5-million design-build contract. Chemung has partnered with Volkert Inc. of Springfield, which designed the project.
The Route 29 northbound approach to the Route 215 intersection ranks as the number one safety need in VDOT’s nine-county Culpeper District with the highest potential for safety improvement. In the five years between 2013 and 2017, there were 113 crashes on that section of the highway.

The electronic signs around the area said "No one is immune". So why is VDOT putting restrictions on commercial traffic on select roads? This project (while necessary) may cost commercial and private interests many thousands of dollars due to the detours. Local residents should suck it up with the added traffic in the light of improved safety in this area.

I've seen the real problems at that intersection as well as actually witnessing several accidents as they happened. People not familiar with the area do not realize that a car or truck can be just beyond the crest of the hill and top the hill and can't stop in time. If I've been close to the crest of the hill I stop on top and don't go below the site line. It's been a bad design for years, just a lot more traffic passing through.

Maybe we will even see a deputy in the area, they are as rare as hen's teeth around New Baltimore and Vint Hill Farms.

This whole unnecessary project is direct result of ignoring rush hour speeding on 29. If your drive 75 mph between 5AM and 8AM on 29 North, you are traffic hazard because you are too slow - posted speed is 55. What a joke.

This project will greatly affect the city as for me, the main thing is that the work of the police was done in the best way. The company( site: ) was engaged in raising funds for this project, so I know a little more information than is in the article.
