• Approved: Town council awarded special use permit for drive-thru.
After a couple of tweaks to the plan, the Warrenton Town Council on Tuesday granted a special use permit for construction of a walk-in medical clinic and pharmacy with a drive-thru window.

Piedmont Urgent Care and an extension of the Remington Drug Co. will occupy the 7,500-square-foot, 1-1/2-story brick building at Blackwell Road and Walker Drive.

Dr. Steve von Elten and his partners will build and own the new structure on a 0.6-acre lot.

The new building could open in 2024, Dr. von Elten said. It will stand near the three-story Warrenton Professional Building, which opened in 1997. The larger structure houses Piedmont Family Practice, which includes Dr. von Elten and seven other physicians, along with the urgent care clinic that it opened about a decade ago in the building’s lower level.

The town planning commission in September unanimously recommended council approval of the special use permit, required for the drive-thru window.

Although supportive of the project, the town council last month requested architectural enhancement of the building’s exterior facing Walker Drive, removal of a landscaping berm, improved directional signs and legal agreements on access should the new building get sold.

Founded in 1913, the independent Remington Drug Co. will establish its first branch location. Travis Hale and Al Roberts own the Main Street pharmacy, which still has a soda fountain.
