Two fugitives arrested following citizen’s report

Fauquier deputies on Wednesday afternoon arrested Brandon Essex, 27, of Catlett, and Betsy Stewart, 29, of Culpeper.
Fauquier sheriff’s deputies arrested two fugitives Wednesday after a Midland resident reported a man peeking into the home’s windows.

The deputies found Brandon Essex, 27, of Catlett, fixing a flat tire in the driveway of the home in the 4100 block of Midland Road just after 1 p.m., Sgt. James Hartman said.

A woman and “two small children” remained in the vehicle, according to Sgt. Hartman.

Culpeper County authorities had issued arrest warrants for Mr. Essex and the woman, Betsy Stewart, 29, of Culpeper, the deputies soon discovered. Ms. Stewart also faced an arrest warrant from Stafford County.

The deputies arrested both of them and during a search found “a suspected controlled narcotic substance in Essex’s possession,” Sgt. Hartman said.

At the county jail in Warrenton, deputies again searched Mr. Essex and found two pills in his wallet, Sgt. Hartman added.

Fauquier deputies charged him with possession of a controlled substance and drug possession by a prisoner.

Both, Mr. Essex and Mr. Stewart remained in jail without bond after appearing before a magistrate, Sgt. Hartman said.

“The children in the vehicle . . . were turned over to family members,” the sergeant added.
