Virginia Gold Cup races postponed until June 20
Fauquier’s largest event, the Virginia Gold Cup attracts about 50,000 people each spring.
Because of the coronavirus pandemic, organizers have postponed the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase meet at Great Meadow near The Plains by seven weeks.
The Warrenton-based Virginia Gold Cup Association released this statement Monday night:
The 95th Running of the Virginia Gold Cup – POSTPONED to Saturday, June 20, 2020.
Based on the latest CDC recommendations for events over 50 people and the declarations issued by the Governor of Virginia, we have made the difficult decision to postpone our races from Saturday, May 2, to Saturday, June 20. All pre-purchased tickets for the May 2nd date will be honored on June 20.
We recognize the need to pull together and be vigilant in protecting each other from infection. On June 20, we will be implementing measures to ensure that protection will happen.
These are unprecedented times and we appreciate your patience and support. If anything changes, we will let you know.
We look forward to enjoying the races with our guests on June 20.
The Virginia Gold Cup Association
Board of Directors
The association posted this statement Saturday, March 14, as it evaluated the situation:
During times of uncertainty, our traditions provide a great sense of comfort. We realize, that for many of you, the Virginia Gold Cup races are a treasured annual tradition, and for others, a bucket-list experience. The time-honored traditions of the Virginia Gold Cup are as much about the fans as the race itself.
We recognize that the impact of this iconic event extends well beyond the historic racetrack of Great Meadow. The Virginia Gold Cup is a cherished and important time for the county of Fauquier and the Commonwealth of Virginia.
We are mindfully aware of our fans, who travel from great distances to join us, as well as our valued employees, whose most intense preparations to host a world-class event begin now.
For these reasons, we have been working carefully and diligently with relevant health experts and authorities to ensure we make the most responsible decision regarding the timing of the 95th Virginia Gold Cup this year.
We thank you for your patience and are committed to providing regular communication and transparency as we move forward. This is not a decision we take lightly and we expect to have an update about the Virginia Gold Cup races and additional information on our upcoming Spring Race in the coming week.
Our hearts are with those near and far who have been affected.
Thank you for being a part of the Virginia Gold Cup family.

Haven't been to to Gold Cup for 15 years. It's way too crowded now and we are too old for all the excitement. Hope it all end is well for all the others that plan on attending. Great Meadows is a great place!
