The Fauquier campus of Lord Fairfax Community College.
By Dewey L. Davis Warrenton
I had hoped the LFCC board would eventually realize the futility of renaming Lord Fairfax Community College.
Their rationale is that they were told by state officials to evaluate the need for a name change. So upon extensive review, they found that a “better name” would be “better”... with no data to support the need for a change or to justify the resulting costs and division.
Ron Maxwell has written eloquently in these pages about the misguided effort to judge the patriots who came before us against today's standards. They lived hundreds of years ago, when the world was quite different.
But we cannot improve our own lives by demonizing our ancestors. And who among us can say we have lived our own lives without fault? More importantly, who are we helping after we spend millions to change the name of our community college? Nobody in Virginia will have their life improved by this action. Our politicians are simply spending our money for their own political posturing.
Yes, we can judge our ancestors harshly, but how will our descendants judge us in the future? Are we leaving them a better world like our ancestors did for us? They fought a war to end slavery, and they passed important civil rights legislation to outlaw discrimination.
In contrast, our own generation has infected the world with obsessive political correctness. I doubt very much that future generations will appreciate the time and money we spent on renaming things.
Tell Governor Northam to stop the nonsense now. It is embarrassing.
