Riding the bench for much of his summer American Legion baseball season, Tyler Shaffer waited patiently for his time to shine.

That came Thursday night in Remington’s 6-5 win over No. 2 seeded Ashburn in a District 16 tournament second-round game played at Stephens City’s Sherando High School baseball field.

Shaffer led sixth-seeded Post 247 with a 2-for-4 performance and scored a run.

But his biggest contribution came in the seventh inning and his team clinging to a 4-3 lead.

Ashburn starter Caleb Barnes loaded the bases before giving over to reliever Michael Zubovich.

Shaffer responded with a two-RBI single to left giving Remington a two-run cushion, 6-3.

“I felt relaxed and waited for a pitch I knew I could do something with,” Shaffer said. “I connected and dropped the ball into the outfield for a hit.”

On being a reserve, Shaffer said he’s played Legion ball for the past four seasons and has always been one of the younger players.

“I knew I’d start and play today when only nine players showed up at the start of the game,” the reserve catcher said. “I enjoy playing Legion ball and it’s especially fun this season with a lot of Kettle Run players on the team.”

Post 2001 got the runs back in the bottom of the inning but Post 247 reliever Hayden Lilek kept Ashburn from scoring additional runs.

“Another game where we do what we have to do to win,” Remington Coach Garrett Croson said. “It wasn’t pretty, we didn’t score a lot of runs but we had solid defense and good pitching. We’re on a roll.”

Chandler Kezele started for the Dirtbaggers lasting five innings. The rising Fauquier senior gave up four hits and walked six. He had three strike outs.

Hayden Lilek had better control with four hits and a walk. He also struck out two Ashburn batters.

Remington took a 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Jason Alverez (2 of 4) led off the frame with a walk and stole second, third and home for a 1-0 lead.

Shaffer followed with a one-out walk and stole second when Alverez came home. He scored on Henry Delavergne’s single.

Travis Croson reached first when right fielder Matthew Lord dropped a fly ball and both he and Dealvergne scored on Hayden Lilek’s double into right centerfield.

Post 2001 scored a single run in the bottom of the inning on George Rosales’ sacrifice fly to centerfield.

Remington plays regular-season champion Winchester Friday night at 7 p.m., at Sherando.

Post 21 squeaked by Leesburg, 5-4, in Thursday night’s nightcap. Winchester scored four runs to take a 5-3 advantage over Post 34.

Ashburn, meanwhile, will play Leesburg Friday at 1 p.m., in the double-elimination tournament.

No. 3 Front Royal remains alive in the consolation bracket with a 6-3 win over Manassas. Post 53 plays Leesburg Friday at 10 a.m.

No results on the game between the two Stafford teams but the winner between the fifth-seeded Americans and No. 8 Nationals will play Ashburn Friday at 1 p.m.
