Never able to produce big innings Remington fell 8-3 Friday night to Winchester in a American Legion baseball game among the last of the unbeaten.

Playing with just 10 players against Post 21 and lacking any solid pitchers for Saturday morning's 10 a.m. consolation game Stafford-Americans, Post 247 determined they wouldn't have the required nine players.

Thus the team forfeited that game and its season is over.

The Americans will now play Winchester 1 p.m., Saturday for the senior division championship with a second game slated for Sunday at 10 a.m., should Winchester lose Saturday.

The district winner receives an automatic berth in next week's state tournament in Purcellville.

If Winchester loses the 1 p.m., game both teams return Sunday for the final game of the series.

Post 247 collected seven hits off Post 21 starter Ty Michaud but Michaud benefitted from three inning-ending double plays.

“(Michaud) was throwing a lot of breaking pitches and all it seemed we could do was hit grounders in the infield,” Remington Coach Garrett Croson said.

Remington took a short-lived 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Matt Shuck reached first when second baseman Alex Dobry booted the first of two grounders.

Shuck took second on Ty Pavlock’s single to left and scored on a Tyler Johnson (2 of 2) opposite-field single.

Winchester scored three runs in the first inning sending nine batters to the plate.

Post 247 starter Henry Delavergne walked the first two batters he faced and that haunted him when leftfielder Jason Alverez misplayed a hit, letting it get by him.

Both runners scored, giving Post 21 the lead for good.

Delavergne gave up three more singles allowing two more runs to cross the plate.

Alverez came on in relief in the second inning and immediately gave up two more runs for a 6-1 Post 21 advantage.

Winchester added another run in the third inning when Jordon Turner hit a sac fly to right.

Remington got two runs back in the sixth inning.

Johnson hit an infield single to start the scoring. Going to third on Justin Vaclavicek’s single, he scored on a passed ball.

Vaclavicek scored on Tyler Shaffer’s infield single.

Pavlock came on in relief of Alverez in the bottom of the inning.

The rising Fauquier High senior last pitched late last summer in a similar Legion ball experience.

“I asked him to go in and throw strikes and that’s what he did,” Coach Croson said.

Pavlock gave up three hits, two walks while striking out four batters. He also gave up an earned run in the eighth inning.

“We ran out of pitchers,” Coach Croson said. “We only had 10 players tonight and it’s tough to get through a long double-elimination tournament with so few players.”
