Conservation, sustainability awards slated Sept. 17

The Energized Research – Learning Institute (ER-LI), a Fauquier group, plans its second round of recognition for individuals and organizations that have contributed to energy conservation and sustainability.

The event will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, at the Vint Hill Craft Winery.

It will be ER-LI’s second recognition event, part of a continuing effort to encourage knowledge sharing, promote projects and educate residents about conservation and sustainability initiatives in Fauquier.

Potential award recipients include:

• Piedmont Internal Medicine in Warrenton (geothermal office building).

• Windy Hill Foundation’s Piedmont Lane apartment complex in The Plains (EarthCraft certified).

• Fauquier Livestock Exchange (solar power).

• The Fauquier Bank’s View Tree branch in Warrenton (geothermal).

• Airlie Foundation (renovated geothermal pavilion).

• Whiffletree Farm near Warrenton (grow/buy local).

• Dominion Construction Group (geothermal, wind, solar).

• Brookside Eco-Friendly Neighborhoods.

• Fauquier High School (geothermal).

Also being recognized are some individuals who have effectively challenged the local status quo and taken actions that have made life in Fauquier county more eco-friendly.

The event will take place in the winery’s retrofitted, pre-World War II barn (geothermal). The co-host is Pearmund Cellars (geothermal).

The public is welcome for an evening of networking, sharing and learning about new sustainable (energy) strategies. To reserve one of the remaining 25 public seats, text 540-219-0445 with name(s).

Visit as more information becomes available.

On May 15, at Poplar Springs in Casanova, ER-LI recognized nine local entities with certificates for energy conservation and sustainable better practices: Fauquier County Public Schools, county government, Pearmund Cellars, Vint Hill Economic Development Authority, Barrel Oak Winery, Vint Hill Craft Winery, Great Harvest Bread Col of Warrenton, Chestnut Forks Tennis and Fitness Club and Poplar Springs – The Inn Spa in Casanova.

ER-LI plans a local public Energy/Sustainability Expo on Nov. 2. Eco-friendly businesses, non-profits, schools, county representatives and the public are welcome.
