The project to rebuilid the southbound span will be complete by Dec. 8, 2022.
Work will begin Thursday, April 29, rehabilitate the southbound Route 17 bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railway and Route 805 in Bealeton.
Caton Construction Group Inc., of Charlottesville, received a $4.99-million contract to complete the project by Dec. 8, 2022.
During construction the contractor will maintain one lane of traffic across the southbound bridge, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation. A walking trail under the bridge will be closed during the project.
Built in 1948, the bridge fails to meet current design standards. The project will replace the bridge superstructure, including the deck and railings. The existing abutments, piers and roadway approaches will be widened to accommodate the widened superstructure.
The rehabilitated bridge will have two 12-foot wide travel lanes with improved shoulders; the deck will be 38 feet wide from rail to rail.
