The oldest pony show in the country begins this week in Warrenton.

A team of about 40 youngsters organized the 99th annual Warrenton Pony Show that runs from Wednesday, June 27, through Sunday, July 1.

During the five-day show, juniors handle hundreds of behind-the-scenes details. They organize prize ribbons, run the silent auction, clean the show grounds, record prizes, polish trophies, assist judges and more.

The show takes place on the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds at 60 E. Shirley Ave. Gates open daily at 8 a.m. and the show is free for spectators.

The show started in 1919 with a group of local children who drew inspiration from the Warrenton Horse Show.

Ninety-nine years later, the junior committee — composed of volunteers 18 and younger — still does most of the work. That makes it unique among “A” rated shows in the U.S.

Local adult volunteers from the Warrenton Pony Show board of directors provide supervision.

The money they raise from the silent auction gets donated to the Fauquier Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

The Warrenton Pony Show for the past several years has contributed more than $50,000 to the Fauquier SPCA.

Blake Bogin, Hailey Gunnell and Helen Lohr serve as show presidents this year.
