The $4.9-million project to replace the Route 17 southbound bridge at Bealeton will continue through 2022.
Starting Friday, June 24, one lane of the southbound Route 17 (Marsh Road) bridge at Bealeton will close for replacement.
The bridge crossed the Norfolk Southern Railway and Route 805 (Bealeton Road).
Southbound traffic will be restricted to a 12-foot travel lane for the majority of the project.
The Virginia Department of Transportation urges motorists to use caution while traveling through the work zone, obey the reduced speed limit of 35 mph and pay attention to signs and other traffic controls.
Caton Construction Group Inc. of Charlottesville won a $4.9-million contract to replace the bridge superstructure, including the deck and railings. The existing bridge dates to 1948.
The new span will have two 12-foot-wide travel lanes with improved shoulders; the deck will be 38 feet wide from rail to rail.
A walking trail under the bridge will be closed during construction. Information about the timing of that closure will be announced soon.
