Computers for education group seeking volunteers

Warrenton-based Bethel Computers for Education seeks volunteers to continue its support of educational programs, particularly in Third World countries.

Affiliated with the Bethel United Methodist Church’s Mission Committee, the non-denominational organization over the years has provided thousands of computers to schools in needy areas of the United Stations, the Caribbean, Africa, Central and South America, Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

The nonprofit group receives donated laptop computers from public and private sources. Volunteers inspect and clean each computer, erasing the hard drives with a Department of Defense-approved application. They load each laptop with a Linux operating system and an array of “open source” educational hardware.

“Volunteers do not need to commit to a set timetable, but a few hours a couple of days a week would be desirable during high-demand periods that vary throughout the year,” said Jack Dunlop, one of the group’s leaders. “Any individual who is retired, has a basic familiarity with computes and is interested in contributing to educational advancement in underserved places should find our project worthwhile and rewarding.”

The 501(c)(3) organization has a workshop in Warrenton.

For more information, call Denny Baumann at 540-878-3056 or Jack Dunlop at 540-347-3769.
