FauquierNow earns top Virginia online news award staff members received 21 individual honors and the Virginia Press Association’s 2018 News Sweepstakes Award for online organizations Saturday night in Norfolk.

The local news operation has earned the Sweepstakes, based on total points for individual journalism awards, three of the six times it has entered the contest since 2013. Charlottesville Tomorrow, which finished second this year, also has won the Sweepstakes three times during that period. Potomac Local won the Sweepstakes in 2012, the first year the press association allowed online-only organizations to participate.

FauquierNow’s individual awards for 2018 work:

First place

• Public safety writing: Murder Victims Led Quiet Lives, Council Candidates Ordered to Stay Apart and Quiet Sheriff’s Colonel Retires — Lawrence Emerson.

• General news writing: Islamic Butcher Shop Event Goes on Despite Challenges — Mr. Emerson.

• Pictorial photo: Scaffolding Around Courthouse Clock Tower — Mr. Emerson.

• General news photo: LOVE Sculpture Unveiling — Mr. Emerson.

• Personality or portrait photo: Sheriff’s Wife in Marshall Christmas Parade — Mr. Emerson.

Second place

The Fauquier Times won the news, advertising and grand sweepstakes awards in its circulation category of mid-sized non-daily newspapers.
