State and local Master Gardeners will offer a Preserving Your Bounty” presentation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, on Zoom.
The fourth and final session in the “Growing Your Own Food Series” will focus on the dilemma many gardeners face: Help, I have more squash than I have friends that I can give it to!
The presenter, Becky Gartner has a bachelor’s degree in home economics education and a master’s in human nutrition and foods, both from Virginia Tech. In her presentation, Ms. Gartner will give an overview of food preservation methods, from drying to pressure cooking, and will discuss the plusses and minuses of each method.
She will also cover the different equipment used for each method, as well as trusted sources for the equipment. Food safety protocols and standards will be emphasized.
Ms. Gartner’s work experiences have allowed her to focus on her specialties of food safety, nutrition and food preservation. She recently transferrd from the Virginia Cooperative Extension offce in Culpeper to be closer to where she grew up, serving in the Virginia Cooperative Extension office in Rockingham County in the Shenandoah Valley. She provides education programs for home food preservation, ServSafe Manager Certification, food safety and healthy living.
