Group battling addiction plans second annual 5-k

The event, which drew more than 200 participants last year, will take place Saturday, Sept. 23, at Verdun Adventure Bound near Rixeyville.
CAYA (Come As You Are), a coalition that provides support and treatment options to those struggling with addiction, will conduct its second annual 5-k run Saturday, Sept. 23.

The event at Verdun Adventure Bound near Rixeyville will raise funds for CAYA’s work. Last year, more than 200 runners and walkers participated.

Culpeper County resident Moira Satre helped start CAYA in April 2016, a year after her 31-year-old son, Bobby, died of a heroin overdose.

In a little more than a year, CAYA and allied organizations have created and/or supported:

• Revive classes — Training on how to recognize the signs of opioid overdose, how to respond appropriately and how to administer the life-saving drug, Narcan.

• Support groups — FODA (Families Overcoming Drug Addiction) meets twice a month at Fauquier Hospital.

• Prevention efforts — Presentations of evidence-based programs, including “Drugs: True Stories” to educate the community and youth.

• Recovery coaching — A partnership with the Richmond-based McShin Foundation to train local addicts in recovery how to coach peers.

• Jail recovery program
— It provides the Fauquier County Adult Detention Center with trained facilitators to work as coaches with inmates in recovery

CAYA also plans to open a recovery center in Warrenton son. It center will provide needed meeting space for existing programs and establish a presence in the community that will make it easier for people to seek treatment and support.

The 5-k advance registration fee is $25 per person. To register, visit or sent a check to P.O. Box 3457, Warrenton, Va. 20188. Advance registration will run through Sept. 14.

Registration — from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. on the day of the event — will cost $30 per per son. T-shirts are guaranteed only to those who preregister. The top overall male and female runners as well as to the top two male and female runners in each age category will receive awards.
