How to address school system turnover rate

A “Friday factoid” last week noted that 301 employees retired or resigned from Fauquier County Public Schools in 2020-21.

Excluding retirements, the school system had a “turnover rate” of 11.6 percent of the total workforce.

Among teachers and other “certified” employees, the separations totaled 178 versus 104 the previous year and 134 in 2018-19.

Retirements last year totaled 78.

The school board reviewed a 15-page turnover report Monday night.

There is an easy way to avoid more 15-page turnover reports: Increase teacher pay.

Who would want to work in Fauquier when you can just go down the road to Prince William or Manassas and make much more?

Look at the salary difference for a teacher with 8 years of experience and a bachelor’s degree:

• Prince William County, $58,639.

• Manassas, $56,649.

• Fauquier, $50,428.

And this difference is even bigger when you add a master's degree: $10,000 more.

If Fauquier County would match Prince William, you would see more teachers looking for jobs here rather than going to the surrounding counties.

Then, the school board would not have to take the time to read a 15-page report on why so many are leaving.
