In dealing with COVD-19, our nation can do better

I had a COVID scare Wednesday. I felt fine all day, but after leaving work, I developed chills and body aches. Immediately upon arriving home, I took my temperature and discovered I had a high fever. I contacted my school to let them know I wouldn’t be in the next day and made plans for a rapid COVID test the following day.

First thing the next morning I drove to Warrenton for the test. As I anxiously awaited the results many thoughts were swirling around in my brain. I’m 56 and healthy, but I know this virus could still cause major damage with long-lasting repercussions for my health.

I expected results within an hour or two and when they didn’t come in, I worried this meant they were positive. I racked my brain for where I could have been exposed. I believe in science. I always wear a mask in public. I use hand sanitizer before and after entering a store. I haven’t eaten in a restaurant or had anything but socially distanced, outdoor visits with friends since March.

Yet, I am one of the lucky ones. I do not have to worry about losing my job if I test positive and need to quarantine. I have great health insurance through my employer. I could afford the $75 for the test.

But what about those who are not that fortunate? If I were unemployed and feared losing my housing, I’m probably not going to spend $75 on a test. After all, it’s most likely just the flu. If I’m employed but don’t have sick leave, I’m not going to be able to do the responsible thing and stay home. And honestly, why should I risk my job or potentially multiple days of pay when others in our community won’t even wear masks.

My results came back negative, certainly a relief, but I am still symptomatic. If this continues, I’ll need to spend another $75 to repeat the rapid test on Monday or opt for the mail in test my insurance covers. Unfortunately, the results from that could take seven to 10 days during which time I’ll be quarantined at home.

America, we have got to do better. We need what the president has promised: free, easily accessible, rapid results tests for anyone who wants one. We also need paid sick leave and passage of another COVID relief bill in Congress. The Democrats are fighting for average Americans, why won’t our president and the GOP?

SaveFauquier - We can't all have the best medical care as Trump gets, and we the TAXPAYER pay for his healthcare. Not a penny of his own money, no bills to worry about, private suite, team of doctors, any drug he wants. Must be nice to be King! Republican's King of Fraud.

"You must not have any serious medical issues or you would know first hand the seriousness of a failed health care system compliments of obamadontcare era."

Talk to the insurance companies and drug companies, there is where the problems are, it's all about making money, not helping people get better.

Sure blame the ACA for illnesses. Ever thought how people COULD be responsible for their own health? Do you exercise? Nope. Do you smoke? Yep. Do you eat a healthy diet? Nope. Do you do drugs? Yep. People have no one but themselves to blame for the majority of their health woes.

Please doctor give me a drug for this, I need something to sleep, I need something to stop eating so much, I need something for the pain, I need, I need, where's my pills!!!!

"Trump's COVID-19 'Miracle' Treatment Relied On Cells Linked To Aborted Fetus
The president curtailed use of fetal tissue in federally funded medical research, but the moral objection apparently vanishes when it's Trump who's in need."

"The COVID-19 treatment President Donald Trump has referred to as a miracle was developed using cells derived from an aborted fetus — a process he has severely curtailed in government-funded medical research to woo the evangelical vote.

Trump last week referred to new COVID-19 treatments, including those he had received, as “miracles coming down from God.”

Among the treatments Trump received was Regeneron Pharmaceuticals’ experimental cocktail of monoclonal antibodies, which is not yet approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. In a video Wednesday, Trump called the Regeneron treatment “the key” to his bounce back from a COVID-19 infection. He called it “like unbelievable.”

“I think this was a blessing from God that I caught [COVID-19]. I think it was a blessing in disguise,” Trump said in the video. “I caught it, I heard about this drug, I said, ‘Let me take it’ … and it was incredible the way it worked.”

Yet the development of the drug is directly at odds with Trump’s stance against using fetal tissue cells in medical research. That stance has been a key to his support from the evangelical community, which opposes abortion.

A second antiviral drug Trump was given, Remdesivir, was also developed using cells originally derived from the tissue of an aborted fetus. In addition, three coronavirus vaccines under development are also using cell lines developed from fetal tissue in research, according to The New York Times. All have received federal funding.

The Regeneron treatment’s efficacy was tested in a lab using HEK 293T cells. That cell line was originally derived from the kidney tissue of a fetus aborted in the Netherlands in the 1970s, according to the company."

Savefauquier - 20 million people disagree with you.
Savefauquiercounty2019 · October 9, 2020 at 11:49 am
Democrats created the collapse of health care. Fauquier is 2 starred rated hospital. 5000 deaths a week in our nation's hospital due to neglience and medical errors per Hopkins study (2016)prior to CV and our government didn't shut them down. If you go to a low rated hospital with CV you probably aren't going to survive. CEOs have cheapened care by hiring immigrants and call them hospitalists and over work them causing medical errors. But when mention the truth, it is racist. The community doctors that provided consistency and visited their Patients in hospitals have been displaced and so have American educated health care professionals. This is 3rd world care. Go pick up a prescription while you are sick and see if the pharmacist cares more about you or pushing vaccines that ruin your liver but are money makers. How many mistakes are local doctors making by misdiagnosing you because they have to see 6 patients an hour vs 4. Their reimbursements have declined forcing out professiinal nurses and hiring techs? You must not have any serious medical issues or you would know first hand the seriousness of a failed health care system compliments of obamadontcare era.

In this pandemic when several people are affected by a coronavirus; we need to make ours and children's immune system strong to fight against this virus. Microgreens could be of help in this situation because these are rich in nutrients and can boost our immune response. https://microgreensworld.com/

Silii no problem, what you obviously missed is that I was asked by quite a few people to share my experience. I have turned down several offers to go public because of misunderstood purposes such as yours. As someone who has volunteered to uphold our constitution and the secrets of our country on the front lines and until my death, there is no PTSD here. As my COTR with DHS stated, everyone is good on the gun range but until you have someone shooting at you to kill you, you won't know your true ability. The virus seems trivial based on my life choices which I do not regret, Cheers my friend......
Silii · October 1, 2020 at 6:03 pm
TruePat, I repeat, I am glad you survived. I brought up the cancer comment because your comments suggest you are experiencing a form of PTSD. When confronted with a life threatenting situations, such as a cancer diagnosis and difficult tretment plan without a certain outcome or in your case covid19 knowing it could turn fatal in a matter of hours, people often develop PTSD sometimes mild, sometimes severe. I feel for you and hope your life will go on normally and that as time passes your natural reaction to facing possible death will diminish. I hope you can develop some compassion towards others and discontinue making comments designed to be snarky. So, all you folks like Doug F can continue your snotty retorts to my posts and call me names. No problem - reflects very poorly on you, not on me.
DougF · October 1, 2020 at 7:00 am
Thanks TruePat. Most likely your IGG and IGM antibodies will still be around in six months, even though the test will not be sufficiently sensitive find them. Additionally, the test does not look for or identify the long lasting T cells that will greatly reduce the impact of a second infection. I wish you the best.
Truepat · October 1, 2020 at 6:27 am
DougF exactly, my main point of Covid 19 is that there is NO medical assistance, and referring to Silii brining cancer into the conversation, there is a known result of cure but at least a team of trained doctors with the ability to "attempt" to save a life..... most likely all will eventually contract covid, I've been asked to share facts of having it for those who are worried about the unknown, I will test again in December to see if the antibodies last six months, already I have been approached by labs to donate my plasma to those not making it..
DougF · September 30, 2020 at 9:46 pm
Silii -- I thought of another interpretation of your question. The answer is that since Virginia's strategy is reach herd immunity by natural infection and vaccination, and both you and I are in Virginia, we both accept the risk that we will "...contract the virus, give it to your friends, loved ones, and strangers, and die from it...".

If you and I were unwilling to accept that risk, we would both become hermits.

Silly question.
DougF · September 30, 2020 at 9:35 pm
Silii -- You do ask silly questions.

Your question was "Are you willing to contract the virus, give it to your friends, loved ones, and strangers, and die from it just for herd immunity?"

The question responded to me pointing out that Sweden currently has fewer excess deaths than Virginia, and Virginia's strategy will lead to it having more deaths per million than Sweden from COVID-19.

Your question is a silly and out of context retort.

However, since you asked, herd immunity is not a goal and not a strategy. It describes the process that leads to an epidemic receding without everyone becoming infected. Herd immunity is reached either by (1) natural infection, AND/OR (2) vaccination.

Sweden reached herd immunity by natural infection. Virginia intends to reach it through a mix of natural infection and vaccination.

Since herd immunity can be reached by vaccination, you must be asking if I'm willing to die so others can be vaccinated. That question is absolutely silly.
Savefauquiercounty2019 · September 30, 2020 at 6:38 pm
Prior to Trump and prior to Covid our nation's hospitals data showed 5000 patients died because of medical errors and neglience. Illegal immigrants overwhelm our Ers because Medicaid pays their emergent care. Obamadontcare cheapened our health care by slicing resources. It use to be hospitals hired bachelor degree or master degree nurses who are with patients 12 hours shift and can help diagnose. American educated health care professionals have been displaced by techs and or immigrants who are oppressed. Wake up and smell the stench of poor, quality care. Look at Fauquier hospital 2 star rating. Research yourself and stop listening to the liberal media.
Truepat · September 30, 2020 at 9:34 am

Silii · September 30, 2020 at 8:04 am
Truepat, Again, I'm glad you survived covid19. May I point out, however, that many people are sent home with frightening, life threatening diagnoses. Have you ever been sent home with a diagnosis of cancer and know you are facing surgery and months of chemo and radiation? It's a human reaction to develop a different view of life any time our heatlh, and life, are threatened by any disease. So, why don't you just ease up and quit trying to guess which commenters have or have not had their lives threatened by disease.
Truepat · September 30, 2020 at 2:22 am
Silii the comments tell me who haven't had it because those of us who unfortunately have had it and manage to survive, come away with an entirely different viewpoint on life and feeling lucky or fortunate to have survived. Believe me when you are sent home by the doctors with the only help being, call 911 if you can't breathe, the argument over wearing a mask or not is the farthest thing you want to speculate on. The last time I felt helpless was when I left the country and was told by a non-American, welcome to where medical help and police assistance is no longer guaranteed........
Silii · September 29, 2020 at 5:54 pm
Doug F, Somewhere along the line you've acquired a high level of anger and need to strike out. In reality, you have no nothing about my background, my career, my education, my religion, my religion, my age or ethnic background. You have no idea where I have lived internationally or what languages I speak. I repeat my question: Are you willing to contract the virus, give it to your friends, loved ones, and strangers, and die from it just for herd immunity? Truepat, I'm glad you survived and don't have any resultant health issues. I know people of varying ages who have not been as fortunate. We all see the count of over 200,000 people haven't survived. You don't know how you contracted covid19 but suspect it was from someone not following the rules. That's a very reasonable conclusion and is the reason people should make every attempt to follow the very simple rules of wearing a face mask, social distancing, hand washing, and just being respectful and staying home if you show any symptoms of being sick. And, I'm curious. How do you know which commenters here have had the virus?
karl engels · September 29, 2020 at 12:18 pm
Red state is yet another spreader if misinformation, ja it’s the same thing every time, you really do need better sources
Truepat · September 29, 2020 at 12:05 pm
As a survivor of Covid-19 I find all the rhetoric from those who have no clue what it's like surprising. The only way to survive this virus is to have a very strong immune system. A normal immune system is designed to kill this type of virus only if it is in good condition. I fortunately have been taking vitamin D for many years along with vitamin C during this virus era and although I am in the age and health categories for doom, I survived. It changes your thoughts about life forever and I did follow all the requirements, mask, hand sanitizer and I still got exposed by someone who didn't follow the rules. However, by wearing the mask I did not expose several people I came in contact with, imagine that. As to how I was exposed, we will never know, however I am passed 90 days and still test positive for antibodies. I did pass all my major after exams including heart and have no damage from the 20 days of hell I suffered. And I never had a fever or cough, this was entirely gastro..... good luck my friends

Silii— perhaps you missed the part where I said Sweden has near zero excess deaths, and Virginia has far greater excess deaths. Or perhaps you are unfamiliar with the term excess deaths. If the former, read better. If the latter, educate yourself.

Given the disparity in excess deaths, Sweden’s population is better off.

Our Democrat posters below can learn much from one of their heroes- President Lyndon Baines Johnson- who did not shut down the nation during the deadly 1968 Hong Kong global pandemic which saw an estimated 1 million dead around the world.

One cannot help but notice how today's Democrat Hypocrites are not destroying LBJ's monuments or burning down his ranch with mass protests in Texas because of his 1968 Hong Kong Flu legacy (or any of his other hideous legacies). They pathologically hate President Trump- and are so delirious with Historic Ignorance On Fire that they could care less that life more or less went on in 1968 America during the deadly global pandemic, except for those demographics and the elderly most susceptible to the contagion, with many similarities to now, lest we forget:

So Doug, if we follow Sweden, who in your family, circle of friends and acquaintances, or just people in general would you like to see get it an die? Are you willing to sacrifice yourself and your family to get to "herd mentality", as Trump puts it?
farmbum · September 28, 2020 at 4:54 pm
COVID is not done yet. 5,500 deaths for a country of 10 million is on par with Virginia fatalities.

Proof that a pandemic requires a National response. Not an every man, woman and child fend for themselves. Or in our country, every state for themselves.
DougF · September 28, 2020 at 4:08 pm
The leaders who failed us are several state governors, including our own. The Northam strategy of suppression of the virus until a vaccine is sufficiently distributed to provide herd immunity is a novel strategy. It has never been tried on a large scale.

Northam's strategy will lead to continued societal suppression for months. Consider that CDC said the vaccine won't be availble until next year. If it arrives January 1 in sufficient quantity to vaccinate 180,000 Virginians a day for a month, 65% of the state's population will be vaccinated by the end of January. If deaths lag by one month, AND the vaccine is 100% effective at preventing death, at the current death rate Virginia will have more deaths per millino than Sweden, and far greater excess deaths.

Sweden embarked on a conventional strategy. They were close to the pre-CoViD-19 WHO pandemic playbook. They are all but done with the pandemic, with so few excess deaths that their excess deaths for the year will soon be zero. They accomplished that feat by leaving schools open for students under 15 years old, not requiring masks, forbidding groups over 50, and only requesting people to social distance. No they have no restrictions. Life is normal.

If Northam had followed Sweden's strategy Virginias results would have been better than Sweden. Virginia has lower percentage of the population consisting of the hard hit elderly.

If you don't like the results Northam is getting, blame him. He had the freedom to use the conventional strategy. Instead, he ran with a popular but untested strategy, and lost.
farmbum · September 28, 2020 at 7:11 am
We need a National strategy on dealing with COVID. If we cannot get a simple test and results within a few hours, consistently , we will never get ahead of this contagion. We also need better leadership that can drive forward for results, health care wise, including basic supplies for protecting people. On top of all that, the economic reality of COVID is here. Throwing money around does not equate to employing people. Stimulus is an old tool for this new problem.

We need leaders to come forward and get us out of this desperate time. And it will not be anyone in the current administration, they have failed us. Miserably.
After four years, we still have the same old problems, and a new unrelenting disease to worry about.

SaveFauquiercounty2019 - "Why can't you push for the dishonest employer to pay for their schooling, their medical bills, their long term care beds, dialysis etc?"

Why? Because most of those dishonest employers are the WEALTHY, including the Trump's that hire cheap labor, or bring cheap labor here by the busload in the old days. Why aren't they being penalized, because they can afford expensive lawyers to draw out courts cases for months to years.

Same goes for TAX EVASION and TAX FRAUD, the IRS even said they don't go after the rich because the IRS doesn't have the funds, time or people to pursue long term lawsuits, so they go after people that can't afford lawyers.

At least 204,243 people have died of covid-19 in the United States.

It can be difficult to comprehend the loss of all these lives in a country so large. The pandemic’s heaviest tolls have occurred in clusters, and many Americans don’t know anyone who has died. But the disease has killed people in all 50 states, the District and most of the territories.

What if all those deaths had happened near you?

Wasn't it Nancy Pelosi that invited everyone to China town after Trump shut down travel? Wasn't it Biden that said Trump was a racist for shutting down travel? Or doesn't this info hit CNN or the 7 other liberal media channels? They message what they want the honest democrats to hear but they do not divulge the truth. 11 million illegals are in this country hired by dishonest employers. How many have died because of COVID and poor, substandard housing spreading it through the vents? 11 million is nothing to shake a stick at when overwhelming our hospitals. But it was Trump that set up the hospitals in the hot spots throughout our country to help community hospitals. He got the vents that were demanded. Biden didn't have these supplies in our country while he was VP. Ralph Nader continously warned previous administrations of the threat of germ warfare. They did nothing. They disarmed the military, sent $150 billion to Iran in the middle of the night. But now COVID is trump's fault. What about the corrupt leaders from Obama administration that are within the CDC, FDA, FBI, CIA, judges... THe CDC did not listen to the first American who called in to say she was sick and was in Italy while the COVID was being spread and killing people. They said it was OK for her to catch a flight back with absolutely no checks. Why didn't our doctors start demanding testing from the get go when they first heard about it? The radical left is destroying this country. Where is HUMA? What happened to Fernstein chinese spy she had driving her for 10 years? Why is it ok for OMAR to marry her brother and get elected and start calling Americans racist? There is a leader in Northern VA who is an antisemitic. Why is this OK? Our democratic governor is a racist. He is being funded by radical left groups. 32 billion given to OPEN SOCIETY foundation which channels monies to "associations" across the world. It is just not the USA these radicals are after. If America is so racist why is the middle east still oppressing their women? Why does the middle east hate gays. But no one questions these wise guys who project their ill behaviors onto the good guys. Americans who support the terrorists, the open borders allowing drug cartels, sex traffickers, and ms 13 gangs through along with a host of other criminals are destroying AMerica. Question them. Have you heard about George Soros? You say the democrats care about the average Americans? Where are the affordable assisted living, long term care beds for our seniors who live on a fixed income? Why was it when Obama Care came through that our premiums sky rocketed and out of pocket expenses reached $17,0000 for a family a year? Why does a senior living on SS and pension which equates to $20,000 a year have to pay out $6700. in out of pocket no including their premiums? This chaos was created by the democrats as they throw resources at illegals and absorb it out of our taxes, out of our communities. Why can't you push for the dishonest employer to pay for their schooling, their medical bills, their long term care beds, dialysis etc?

Enough of the Spectacular Lies suggesting President Trump and the Republicans are not doing enough to stop the spread and suffering caused by a Chinese Communist Military Research Lab accidentally or deliberately releasing the Wuhan Red Death into our world as a biological warfare weapon and then covering it up to ensure maximum world economic and human devastation so that China alone is not spared the economic and human devastation. Democrats who love Communism so much should move to China- where demonstrators are shot in the head and have their livers harvested for re-sale; or if they are among the more fortunate- simply be welded into their apartments by their local CHICOM Army to prevent them from spreading the Wuhan Red Death in their over-populated cities.

The President and the Republican-majority U.S. Senate have taken VAST and DECISIVE measures with UNPRECEDENTED VAST SPENDING on the Wuhan Red Death to date in this country with no help from the Democrat Party and its leaders every step of the way. The trillions of dollars already spent on previous Wuhan Red Death emergency bills have not even begun to be spent, much less accounted for as yet across America and the world. Already, the Democrats have achieved all kinds of outrageous non-COVID spending in the trillions- and want more bail-outs of failed Democrat States and Cities to be paid by current generations of Taxpayers and a dwindling number of Future Taxpayers not yet even born, assuming our dying empire survives another 5 or 10 years. Mr. Goodwin below has it correct- the Democrat Party is not interested in COVID-19 relief or providing immediate, emergency help to the American People- unless of course- they can force all American taxpayers to FINANCIALLY BAIL OUT DECADES OF CRIMINAL MALADMINISTRATION OF THE CORRUPT, FAILING DEMOCRAT-RUN STATES AND MAJOR CITIES WITH NON-COVID TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN SPENDING IN THE PROCESS, CHANGING OUR WHOLE FORM OF GOVERNMENT AND ENSLAVING ALL REMAINING FREE TAXPAYING AMERICAN CITIZENS and their genetic offspring not yet born. Got It?

KEY NOVEMBER, 2020 ELECTION TAKEAWAY: Given the VAST EVIDENCE TO DATE, anyone who votes Democrat not only hates themselves and is ignorant of history- they are also either very stupid or very dangerous.

Well said. Trump has lied from the very beginning and, among other quite cruel things aimed at the covid 19 crisis, has purposely targeted states with Democratic governors to short them on PPEs for their overburdened health care workers. He has pitted states into a bidding wars against each other and the government for much needed ventilators, PPEs, etc. He has done this stuff and more and more than once as if no Republicans live in a state with a Democratic governor, you know, like no Republicans live in Virginia, right? Get it? He has CDC, FDA, DHHS all in a political knot. His covid task force is a huge joke, so much so he quit doing his 'press conference update' jokes several months ago when he took such criticism for his insane and ignorant bleach and lysol comments. He continues to hold super spreader events while simultaneously his top health care appointees preach masks and social distancing. His lies are on Bob Woodward's tapes. Trump is just an evil narcissistic person and you folks who think he's for you are so duped it isn't even funny. Oh, and the House passed another COVID relief bill over 4 months ago - it's been sitting in the Senate where Mitch McConnell didn't even bring it to the floor for debate. Meanwhile, Trump continues to make huge money for his holdings such as Doral, Mar-a-Lago, Bedminster, Trump International in DC. He has a case at the Supreme Court NOW that could completely do away with the Affordable Care Act and coverage for pre-existing conditions from any health insurance provider, on SCOTUS docket for Nov 10 after millions of fools vote for him and their own demise. I've never seen so many people follow a nasty, manipulative pied piper straight into the river. By the way, are you one of the 'disgusting' people he won't have to shake hands with, his words about one of the good things about covid19 - he won't have to shake hands with disgusting people anymore.

"The Democrats are fighting for average Americans, why won’t our president and the GOP?"

Because Trump is not an average American. He's a rich, elitist, Wharton School graduate. He uses the small guy as urinal target practice when he's not boffing paid escorts such as Stormy Daniels...while his wife is pregnant. Then again, I'd say that Trump is a true Conservative Christian, part of the 'moral majority, just like Jerry 'The Watcher' Falwell.
