Republican supervisor says he must leave the party
File Photo/Lawrence Emerson
Supervisor Holder Trmbo writes: “ I can no longer affiliate with a party that, in the absence of a full and immediate demand for resignation, fails to accept honest responsibility for its own culpability in an attack on democracy, the capital of the country and an election of the people, by the people and for the people.”
By Holder Trumbo
I have watched the events of the last few days with increasing discouragement. First, I saw our president attack democracy in the form of his self-serving call to the secretary of the state of Georgia, a baseless attempt to subvert the integrity of the election in that state. Bullying an elected official to change the outcome of an election is illegal and ethically it is just wrong. There’s no defense for going about things in this manner.
Then I watched his followers, who were either unaware of his prior actions (or did not care) assemble in support of him on the mall. He whipped them up as he has been doing for months, knowing that a popular election was beyond his reach and extorted them to attack the people’s house on Capitol Hill. From behind ballistic rated glass, paid for by taxpayers, Trump’s enablers and then Trump himself incited insurrection and committed sedition. Giuliani’s urging “trial by combat.” Don Jr.: “We are coming for you.” And then the president of the United States himself after delivering over an hour-long speech said this: “We fight like hell and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not going to have a country anymore…we’re going to the Capital…to give them the kind of pride and boldness…to take our country back.”
After all the dog whistles had been blown, and while pointing at the Capitol, Trump told the attendees, “So let’s walk down Pennsylvania Avenue.” Instead of walking with them, Trump retreated to the safety of the taxpayer-funded White House and Secret Service protection. His mob descended upon our nation’s Capitol to stop a constitutionally required process.
In the shocking aftermath, too many in the Republican Party consumed, retweeted and propagated more misinformation and falsehoods to avoid the public reckoning of cold hard facts. In a sad and bizarre twist of reasoning, they invoked the actions of others last summer as an excuse, a license, a reason, a justification for these actions. It is crystal clear to me that the party is in crisis and needs an intervention. Unfortunately, it is also clear to me that the party does not want a lifeline so they could save themselves.
I waited for real leaders to stand up and decry the traitors for what they are, and while some did, the majority hedged and waited to see what would be in their best political interests before acting. What will get me the most votes in the next election and how can I preserve myself?
All of this leads me to the obvious. I can no longer affiliate with a party that, in the absence of a full and immediate demand for resignation, fails to accept honest responsibility for its own culpability in an attack on democracy, the capital of the country and an election of the people, by the people and for the people.
My core values have not changed, and I still believe in protecting and guarding the people’s interests. I still believe that limited government is better and closer to the people. I still believe most people desire to keep their hard-earned wealth. I still believe in life for the innocent.
I have supported the party and its candidates, including Trump, with a dream of reclaiming the lost territory of the Reagan years and the hope that it would move back to being a productive participant in a national discussion of mutually productive interests. I accept my guilt for being so naïve as to believe in such a selfless fairyland in a world peppered with so many self-serving opportunists. I am disappointed in myself, the president and a party that appears to me to be more about its own preservation than standing up for what is right. I have assisted in the enabling of this and I recognize that I have been wrong. This is a matter of conscience for me.
Once upon a time the Republican Party was the party that tried to bring better ideas to the table. I will continue to hope for candidates that will present themselves to the people with better ideas, the ability to gain their confidence and even more, the ability to execute those plans. Until the party can do that, they do not deserve my allegiance or yours. No party does.
I believe that people should free themselves from such blind allegiance. Seek facts and the truth that they reveal rather than selecting random information from dubious sources as support for preconceived notions. Regain the capacity for critical thought and select elected officials by their ability to serve you, not themselves. That is the job of the elected servant. Never let any of us forget it.
In the spirit of service.

Republicans, use your anger wisely. Turn it into energy and start calling the 10 republican representatives that voted for impeachment. 74 million plus supporters need to overload their circuits with phone calls. Representatives numbers can be found on line but call their DC office.

It's been apparent for many years that both parties are on the take from lobbyist and now it's in the public view, when you have mostly very rich individuals taking pay cuts to become an elected official, it's apparent they are there for the power and position, both parties corruption has been revealed

Linda Ward - Thank you for citing that.
So we should see the courageous leaders of these cities and the courageous upper levels of the state and national democrat party follow in Holder's footsteps and "do the right thing" by leaving their party. After standing by and allowing mobs of rioters and looters to gang rape city after city - it would be the only courageous thing to do. Right?
But seeing as how the only standards they have are double standards - I'm not holding my breath.

The radical left will do anything and everything to take over America and Americans. Let us not forget who funded the Wahan Lab and how the germ warfare started. Trump brought jobs back to America. The radical left established NAFTA which created a down ward slide with our economy while these countries did not follow any assemblance of fairness to their workers including children. It created slave labor. Only the honest American businesses follow the US Labor Laws while the dishonest businesses do not follow policy, regulations to hire Americans first, they instead have H1N1 visa worker or illegals immigrants. It was Chuck Schumer that created the lottery system. All these workers are not vetted. The honest Americans are now fed up with being abused, over and over. The radical left when you speak out will call you a bigot, racist, homophobic, sexist. WHile they permit oppressed women from foreign countries to be taken advantage of. They can't drive or vote in their own countries and are forced to garb up. Yet America and Americans are racists. What world does Pablo live in? Denial or just the blame game. Pablo, how many people have you taken advantage of? Are Illegals in this county letting employers use their children for slave labor? Are illegals slave labor?

The extreme-right brainwashing machine is truly very powerful.
Every developed nation in the west has healthcare for their citizens, yet in America, the richest country on the planet, this is considered a “radical” idea by republicans.
A living wage is considered “radical” by republicans.
And now, the President of the United States has incited a riot to commit sedition and insurrection, attacked the very constitution he swore an oath to uphold, aided by other republicans, and called his own vice-president a p___y, yet this is not considered radical!
Bestkept, and others who defend this man and his enablers, what world do you live in?
farmbum · January 13, 2021 at 6:42 am
The "radical left".
Did not storm the capital. With the intent on overthrowing the government based on a web of lies.
The "radical left".
Are not being arrested for sedition and treason as we speak.
The "radical left".
Are not planning armed "protests" in State Capitals and the inauguration as events unfold.
You have to ask yourself, country or party? Ideology or vision? Freedom or following? Liberty or death?

Where were you when Amy Schumer and the ME 2 Movement led by an illegal beat on federal doors during Kavanaugh's confirmation, a good man accused of being a gang rapists? Where were you when Madonna got onto of a platform and rallied with pink, vagina hats and wanted to bomb the white house? Where were you sir during these past few years where so many of our cities and towns were being destroyed, burned and its people murdered? WHere were you sir when the MS 13 gangs murdered American some of our children and recruiting our school students into their gangs as the left screamed to allow folks to pour over our borders unvetted? WHere were you when Huma and peodiphile husband and elected official were taking information off of Hiliary's computer? Where is Huma? Where are you sir when dishonest businesses have pushed out the American worker, called them lazy, racists and hire illegals and short change Americans of resources, which is a form of raping resources regardless if it harms us? Where were you when they started yelling impeachment of Trump before he came into office and throughout his entire term? WHere were you when they threatened Devos who had to have armed guards enter our public schools while American teachers supported their unions which dues were used to put elected socialists into office, hence Northam and others. WHere were you when Obama sent 15 billion in cash to Iran in the middle of the night prior to his departure and got away with it. THe excuses to this horrific behavior was swept under the carpet. You have sat and down nothing while our teachers have been sorely underpaid and overworked and treated as though they are unskilled laborers while illegals absorb our educational resources to include free preschool. We were brought up if you have a child, you should be able to take care of them. Why are taxpayers being abused to assist in raising illegal's children? There are several DACA recipients that have gotten free everything to include UVA schooling and turn around and call Americans racists?? You have your nerve using Trump as your escape goat. Republicans like yourself do not lead, a follower and get put in their place by the radical left. We will never forget the horrific treatment of a host of republicans including two supreme court judges by the radical left. Where were you protecting these good men???

Mr. Trumbo, thank you for your courage and service. As a conservative Dem, who has voted for Rs and Ds, I value the role of moderate Rs who sadly have been pushed out of the R party. Your reputation as a sound, prudent Supervisor is widespread in our community. You will continue to have my vote in Scott District, in your next election. I believe you are serving your fourth term, which speaks loudly to the quality of your service.
Demosthenes · January 12, 2021 at 1:35 pm
rued - Trump might not be a viable candidate in 2024, whether he is allowed to run or not. So the Republican party will be better off if they have that realization now rather than four years from now. The sooner Republicans can declare themselves to no longer be the party of Trump, the better.

Thank you Mr. Trumbo for serving as a Republican Supervisor of the Scott District all those years. It's interesting to look back at the last election. The Scott District provided the majority of presidential political contributions in Fauquier County. I'm sure Joe will personally thank each and every one of you.
So you don't want to be a Republican any more. That pretty much leaves you to the Democrats. That's all and well, they say they've got a big tent and are all inclusive.
Some of your greeters might include:
Joe B.-career politician with no accomplishments after 47 years of service.
Jill B.-Excuse me Doctor Jill, expert on WuFlue and adultry.
Hussein Obama-"If you like your health care plan you'll be able to keep it and see falling costs"
Ralph Northam-abortion comments on murdering babies, too ghoulish to go any further.
Bill Clinton-frequent flier account holder on the Epstein Island service, along with publicly accused by four women of sexual assault. Don't forget he admires a fine cigar and young interns.
Hillary Clinton-Pay for Play as Secretary of State which enriched the Clinton Foundation.
Terry McAuliffe-Did the FBI ever finish their investigation with his connection to Chinese money? Guess we'll never know.
Chuck Shummer-Threatened two sitting Supreme Court Justices at the Supreme Court, that's punishable with ten years in prison.
Nancy Pelosi-Destruction of Government Property during a State of the Union Address, that's punishable with a $250,000 fine, ten years imprisonment or both.
And last but not least let's throw in Jeffry Toobin-the Zoom poster boy for online pleasuring ones self.
I ask you, who wouldn't want to leave the Republican Party and join a distinguished group like this.
AngryBob · January 12, 2021 at 8:41 am
Well, as they say, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Trump won Fauquier by a large margin so this announcement won't benefit Mr. Trumbo's political career. This fiasco has been totally blown out of proportion by the liberal media and tech/social media companies that now need to suck up to the DNC.
Biden's inauguration theme is "America United". Impeaching Trump on his last day in office is an "Up yours!" to all 74,223,744 people who voted for him. That isn't uniting anyone.
If there is one thing I've learned from the last 4 years it's that there may be a lot of bad republicans, but there are no good democrats.

Twist it as you wish, Demosthenes.
Holder, any flaws you are trying to fix are not fixed by running away. They are fixed by reaffirming to every Republican what our values are. They are fixed by ensuring that the underlying cause for the anger, justifiably felt by the misguided Republicans that followed agitators into the Capital, is addressed by ensuring that elections are transparent. It is fixed by ensuring that poll monitors are allowed to effectively do what they need to do to ensure election integrity. It is fixed by allowing independent forensic analysis of ALL election artifacts, not just those deemed permissible by politicians that have a stake in the outcome. It is fixed by not merely accepting the word of politicians refuting claims of fraud but by requiring them to provide evidence that laws were followed, the chain of custody was intact, that numbers add up by showing how the allegations are wrong (not just stating that they are wrong). It is fixed by not obfuscating the findings of independent investigators with legal gamesmanship.
Demosthenes · January 12, 2021 at 7:12 am
For those who are losing their minds over the thought that Trumbo is now choosing to be a democrat, read his words again. He never said he is a democrat. But he feels morally obligated to make a stand against the path that the Republicans have chosen.
Republicans can probably still get his vote (and occasionally mine) if they run good people who stand up for what is right and stick to basic conservative ideas like small government.

Goodwin's analogy is pretty shoddy (all Muslims should stop being Muslims because of Islamic terrorism).
A better analogy would be if a person of faith (any faith, whatever) decided that their particular sect had lost its way as it embraced violence. And the person decided to hold onto their values and beliefs by leaving the dangerously lost sect.
Demosthenes · January 12, 2021 at 7:05 am

Bravo for the supervisor.
The Republican party is dead. They will be forever linked to treasonous and insurrectionists acts against the government.
Those that support those acts, do so based on a foundation of lies.
It's time for a new path forward for those that call themselves Republican's.
It is a time they look at their own values and morals and see what positive change they can bring to the table of liberty.
Silii · January 12, 2021 at 6:28 am
Now we need more members of the BOS to do what Mr. Trumbo did. Absent public statements, they are indicating their support of Trump and the violent insurrection against our government.
HappyBob · January 12, 2021 at 6:01 am
This takes guts and I applaud you. True leaders can speak the truth to their constituents even when their constituents are demanding bad policy, heads on spikes etc... Imagine if just some of those 140+ treasonous congress people went back to their home states, held town halls and told the fiery mobs to stand down, the president is out of control, Your election was not compromised... If only. These old white-power keyboard warriors throwing hate are dying breed, pandered to for the last time. Ignore their ignorance and know that there will be a noble path forward for common sense conservatives and common sense liberals. Those screaming now will be left behind in the wake of partisanship, and they know it. That is why they are so scared. They love their dear hatred, it enables them to focus on something other than their own failures in life. I pray for unity for those who choose to use their intellect, and misery for those who do not.

Donald Trump is not, and never has been, a republican.
On January 6, just before the riot, Don jr. said “This isn’t your Republican Party anymore, it’s Donald Trump’s Republican Party.”
I haven’t heard 1 prominent Republican in a leadership position in the house or senate refute that statement.
The Republican Party that you envision is gone.
