Scott District school board seat applications sought

The Fauquier County School Board will select an interim Scott District member in early January.
Fauquier’s school board will accept letters of interest through Dec. 29 from Scott District citizens interested in serving on an interim basis.

The board next month will appoint a Scott District member to succeed Suzanne Sloane, who resigned Dec. 15 after six years in office.

The new member will serve until a special election next November for the final year of term.

Those who want to apply may do so here.

The board will interview applicants in a closed session Monday, Jan. 3, in the school administrative offices at 320 Hospital Drive in Warrenton, according to Chairwoman Donna Grove (Cedar Run District).

Following the closed session, the board will meet publicly and consider the appointment of an interim Scott District member.

Under the Code of Virginia, the board also will petition the circuit court for a special election next November to fill the balance of term, through December 2023, Ms. Grove said.

Fauquier school board members earn annual stipends of $12,000. The chairman earns $14,000 and the vice chairman earns $13,300.

The five-member board sets policy, the annual budget, makes personnel decisions, hires the superintendent and hears appeals in employee and student discipline cases. School boards in Virginia have no taxing authority and rely on state and local government appropriations.

For more information about the position, visit Fauquier County School Board Policy 1-1.3, the Virginia School Boards Association or the National School Boards Association.
