Sheriff’s office announces first ‘Citizen’s Academy’

The free academy, with up to 20 participants, will run nine weeks, starting June 4.
The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office has begun accepting applications for its first “Citizen’s Academy,” a nine-week program in which participants will gain a better understanding of the agency’s work.

Through classroom presentations and first-hand exposure, participants will learn about civil process/court security, communications (911), criminal investigations, corrections, patrol operations and school resource officers.  Demonstrations will include the Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team, drones, crime scene investigators, the bike unit, the canine unit (and much more.
 
The Sheriff’s Citizens Academy is open to all Fauquier County residents.  Participants must be at least 18 years and must pass a simple background check.

Space is limited to 20 participants, with the expectation that those accepted will attend all meetings. The academy sessions will take place nine consecutive Tuesdays, starting June 4, at 78 W. Lee St. The sessions will start with dinner at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday evening. 
 
The office offers three ways to get an application: 

• Visit the sheriff’s website.

• Stop by the Civil Process/Court Security Division in person. 
 
Completed applications, due May 24, must be mailed or delivered to the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office, Attn: Lt. Mark Jones, 78 W. Lee St., Warrenton, Va. 20186.
