Shopping center speeding threatens death or injury

By Bruce Crandall
Broad Run

Is this going to be the largest personal injury or death lawsuit we’ve seen around here?

Could YOU be on the defendant side of this lawsuit?

I’m talking about the “thoroughfare” passing the entrances to Safeway in Warrenton.

Sure, you just made your ABC purchase and you are in a rush to get out of the shopping center to the nearest street. C’mon, you are in a hurry, right? So you slow down a little and push on through.

When you hit a 3-year-old who pops out from behind the pillars or an older person or a parent with a shopping cart and a child in tow, even if you are “slowed down,” you will injure and maybe kill that person. Simple physics.

Anyone you hit or their survivors, will be injured and ready to sue you. You are the responsible party, not the shopping center, which has taken reasonable measures to alleviate the problem. Not the Warrenton Police Department that cannot monitor, let alone ticket you on this private property. It is YOU.

Even after the new LED STOP signs, casual and frequent observation shows many drivers are still rushing, maybe slowing, but pushing through without stopping. There are clear and obvious STOP markings in both directions for both crosswalks and main entrance/exits. That simple fact guarantees your liability.

Forget about the hurry to get home; put down your cell phone. STOP where you are required to stop. Or you may face a lifetime of consequences. Think about those times you hit the brakes at the last moment; now imagine you missed a beat and your luck ran out.

Keep your fellow citizens safe in all the shopping centers and the local streets. It is up to you the driver.
