Ten local students attend Boys State and Girls State
Seven rising seniors from Fauquier County high schools took part in Boys State last month at Redford University.
Ten Fauquier County Public Schools student attended American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State last month.
Boys State at Radford University and Girls State at Longwood University taught rising seniors about the responsibility of citizenship and the importance of leadership skills.
Grouped into cities, the delegates spent an intensive week, June 16 to 22, actively creating their own local and state governments. The non-partisan program covered the political process, law and the courts, parliamentary procedure and Virginia political history. The students also had opportunities to run for elected officer positions. Guest speakers included the governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, state legislators and mayors.
Students also participated in chorus, moot court, public speaking, veterans’ oral history and sports. College Day gave the delegates an afternoon to meet with representatives from colleges, universities and service academies from across the country to learn about admissions, campus life and financial aid.

Emma Gray and Teaghan Doran of Kettle Run and Celeste Pollack of Fauquier High attended Girls State.
Celeste Pollack was selected to participate in Girls Nation July 20-27 in Washington, D.C., where she will serve as a “senator” and will participate in a mock legislature. She is the second Fauquier student to attend Girls Nation. The first was Mary Brady Mills in 1997.
American Legion Post 247 in Remington, its auxiliary, Post 72 in Warrenton and the American Legion Riders of Post 72 sponsored the local students’ participation. Additional financial support came from the Sumerduck, Catlett, Casanova and Calverton Ruritans and Post 72 Auxiliary.
