This tipping point will cost Republicans dearly

By Tina Nagy

While some of you were pouring yourself a nightcap Tuesday, chilling on the porch or perhaps catching up on the latest episode of The Bachelor, Alabama quietly, quickly and overwhelmingly passed an abortion ban with almost no exceptions.

No exceptions for victims of rape or incest, no exceptions for women suffering with mental illness and taking medication that could harm the baby. No exceptions for women who are addicted to methamphetamines or for severe fetal abnormalities like microcephaly or paralyzing spina bifida.

Worst of all, this is occurring at a time when we have a national drug crisis, and many of these babies will be born dependent on drugs and/or with birth defects.

Alabaman senators are so serious about enforcing this bill that any doctor who now dares to perform an abortion in the state will be punished not with fines, but with up to 99 years in prison. Of course, the passing of this bill was never in question since Republicans hold 27 of the 35 seats in the Alabama House.

The only thing that was ever in question was the exceptions. The sole exception made was if there was a “serious health risk” to the woman, though what exactly would constitute a “serious health risk” wasn't made clear, and with gray areas so gray and lines of distinction so hazy, and with prison sentences so steep, it’s doubtful that any doctor would want to take that chance . . . at least until the last minute when the danger is so acute that death becomes imminent, and perhaps not even then, depending on the regulations of the hospital he is working in, or fearing that the woman is bound to die in any case — well then why take the chance of being sued for the mother's death as well?

And why would Alabama pass such a bill? No speculation is needed here, since the intended purpose of the bill was made clear by the person who introduced it. “My goal with this bill, and I think all of our goal, is to have Roe vs. Wade turned over,” stated Sen. Terri Collins, who was rejoicing over the idea of a total ban on abortion nationwide. “We’re excited about the possibilities that it could mean.”

Right now, as you sit reading this, while the so-called “moral majority” is congratulating themselves on their victory and wallowing in their own self-righteousness, no mention will be made of the more than 400,000 children in the U.S. still awaiting adoption because nobody wants them. No mention will be made of the tens of thousands of babies born to drug addicts each year or of the thousands of babies abandoned in hospitals. And no mention will be made of the millions of single-issue voters who are pro-choice, of pro-choice activists or of Democrats, who will use this as incentive to rally their base and to attack Republicans and Trump.

Conservatives think they have won a victory but don’t understand they have overplayed their hands. Republicans don’t realize it yet, but this will unleash a women’s movement comparable to that of 1960s and which will lose them the election, and many elections to come.

Calypso - definitely not confused, don't you mean "The Woman". I'll rank you with the propagandists and the delusional.

Hey Tony, I'll rank you among the angry and confused........I'll say a word to "The Man" for you - Enjoy the beautiful day (:

Definition of viability. : the quality or state of being viable: such as. a(1) : the ability to live, grow, and develop the viability of seeds under dry conditions. (2) : the capability of a fetus to survive outside the uterus fetal viability.
Tony Bentley · May 31, 2019 at 9:11 am
Calypso - Were you one of those people standing at the airport, holding signs saying "Baby Killers" when soldiers returned from Vietnam?

Neither party has stopped sending soldiers off to war, so what does that make them and those soldiers in your eyes?

The Dark One? The Creator? Republicans walk in the Light? Read much fiction in your life?
Jim Griffin · May 30, 2019 at 9:20 pm
On the odd chance you're referring to me, I referenced the US Supreme Court opinion on the 14th Amendment's extension of a right to privacy until viability. The Supreme Court's opinion is the rule of law, not mine.

Your suggestion that anyone expressing their opinion here in writing "sounds" very angry is beyond ridiculous, still more so your unfounded slanderous allegation: "probably killed innocents yourself."

This issue has no party. A Republican-dominated Supreme Court decided Roe 6-3 (with a Democrat dissenting). California's Republican Governor Ronald Reagan signed one of America's most liberal abortion laws. Even Pat Robertson and numerous leading Republicans today stand opposed to the Alabama law, and the US Supreme Court this week reminded us all that privacy until viability is the rule of case law and constitution.
Calypso · May 30, 2019 at 9:05 pm
You are voicing you opinion, everyone has one...........How can you say that the "Moral Majority" is wallowing in their own self righteousness? Didn't you know that good people tend to be humble rather than wearing their accomplishments on their sleeves? You sound like a very angry who has probably killed innocents yourself. You on your "high horse", do you actually think your education puts you above The Creator? Have you ever heard the term "thou shall not kill"? We are here on this planet for a very short time. What we do here and the choices we make here will determine where our spirit goes once it leaves our body....How much time do you think You have left? The Democrats spread a darkness across our countryside, they walk along side the Dark One.......... Republicans are not perfect but they strive to walk in the Light. I applaud Alabama. God Bless our country.

From today's WaPo article on US SupCt's abortion decision today, where this SupCt court essentially upheld Roe by deferring to the 7th Circuit's decision in this case:

"The 7th Circuit panel said the provision could not stand, because “nothing in the Fourteenth Amendment [of the Constitution] or Supreme Court precedent allows the state to invade this privacy realm to examine the underlying basis for a woman’s decision to terminate her pregnancy prior to viability.”

A very conservative approach, one I applaud.
Truepat · May 28, 2019 at 8:19 am
The best way to maintain control of your body when it comes to abortion is to practice safe sex and prevent unwanted pregnancies. Rape should be considered a violation and be the exception as well as a major medical issue.

Nature is already doing that nonewtaxes -

"Pollutants Implicated in Births of More Girls Than Boys Baby girls:

In some communities, exposure to dioxin and other pollutants can lead to higher birth rates of girls than boys.
A recent study found that residents of Canadian communities who were exposed to emissions from polluting industries such as oil refineries, metal smelters, and pulp mills gave birth to more females than males, a reversal of the normal sex ratio.
This is likely due to high levels of common air pollutants called dioxins and is not a surprising finding, according to James Argo, a medical geographer with the IntrAmericas Centre for Environment and Health, who conducted the study. “There is a very strong association [in the scientific literature] between chronic exposure to dioxins and an inverted sex ratio,” he said."

Today 'm representing as a woman. You know, my right to choose the gender de jour. As a woman, I find it wrong to kill the bay inside of me.

Women could end the abortion issue with relative ease. Abort 99% of the male babies for the next 3 generations. The population would then be mostly women. Why cant they see that? Just keep enough males around for breeding.

Unions must represent their members in just as one-sided a fashion as does a corporate spokesperson or attorney. Collective bargaining is a First Amendment constitutional right (freedom of assocation) statutorily authorized by federal law and implemented by the National Labor Relations Board.

While Guzman is a state legislator and has no say on social security increases, she did introduce a bill giving seniors a $1,000 tax credit. You ask if she is critical of employers hiring illegals; Yes, she is no doubt critical of President Trump's companies hypocritically doing just that.

Your purely partisan views are a sad reflection on what should be civility. I ask again: Are SFC19 and BKS the same person using two pseudonyms? Each makes the same comments in the same words, answering questions directed to the other.

I believe there is one place we agree: Funding local schools and recognizing the value of teachers and other public servants, like our fine sheriff. Rep. Elizabeth Guzman took time the other day to pass a commendation for Fauquier Schools' Wendy Wilcox, a local teacher for 37 years,

and sponsored another commendation for Sheriff Bob Mosier.

BTW, there's a candidate who founded Hardwired, a global organization protecting religious freedom, for example, for muslims. In 2012, she was awarded the Second Annual Ahmadiyya Muslim Humanitarian Award for her congressional work defending their community worldwide.

She's the Republican candidate for the 7th Congressional District, Tina Ramirez.
Silii · May 23, 2019 at 7:46 pm
The point of choice is just that. A woman's choice, along with anyone she wants to consult or make a decision with. Her decision isn't anyone else's business. The government has absolutely no business interfering. Nor does any individual have any business interfering. The reason a woman has an abortion is nobody else's business. Period. Why do all you men rape your wives or daughters or nieces or other girls? There are thousands of pregnancies in the US every year because men rape their daughters, wives, or any woman. Again - only the woman's business.

Democrats, such as Elizabeth Guzman support one sided political union that have helped fund socialist leaders while using union dues. Guzman is pushing for a corporation in No VA to be unionized so their workers get fair wages, working conditions and benefits. Do you wonder why she is not running her mouth to the dishonest businesses, employers who hire illegals? Why isn't she trying to stop illegal entry? Why does she want American businesses to double min wage for unskilled workers and not say anything about social security increases for our seniors? When she pushes the price of living more than what it already is, what is her plan for teachers salaries and benefits? These political unions talk a goid game but they bankrupt cities, towns with paying workers high salaries and pensions the towns can't afford while the honest businesses collapse cause they can't afford the democrats expectations. Elizabeth Guzman supports leaders such as delegate ibraheem Samirah who calls republicans bigots but he has his own predjudices. He wants BDS. He states giving money to Israel is like giving money to KKK.
Residents of Fauquier, we are not racists, sexists, homophobes. These leaders need to be put under a microscope.
I have good friends who were brought up in orphanages and foster homes. We give women more alternatives in hospitals before deciding on adoption, why not before abortions? Planned parenthood gives millions to Democrat candidates. If they have monies to donate, why are you agreeing to contribute your taxes to this organization? Why are we paying for other ountries abortions? Our society is more concerned with animals than babies.

We should be working to eliminate the current discrepancy between when science tells us human life begins (conception) and when the law protects human life. This is a human rights issue.
Jim Griffin · May 23, 2019 at 12:12 pm
Are you, BKS, the same person as SFC19?

I ask because I ask SFC19 and you answer. Not the first time.

You go on to deride the lifeblood of the government we cherish and for which so many have given their lives. You attack others purely by inference and association. Sadly uncivil, BKS. Or SFC19. Whomever you are, hiding in the shadows, sniping, libeling and slandering from a pseudonymous perch.

If you have evidence against Elizabeth Guzman, let's hear it, but it sounds like it's in league with falsehoods like me wearing "the masks of antifa, KKK." Yes, she supports Democrats. She is a Democrat. Ran as one. Won as one. If she has done something wrong, let's hear it. Directly and not by association or inference, please.
Silii · May 23, 2019 at 12:11 pm
Odd how those so opposed to women making their own reproductive choices feel just fine in denigrating people already born. Such ugly, hateful screeds from those who purport to "love life." The people you are denigrating and hating have heartbeats so why aren't their lives just as "precious" as the unborn? I can't believe I live in a community so full of hatred and prejudice and ignorant of facts.
BestKeptSecrets · May 23, 2019 at 11:56 am
Elizabeth Guzman supports these leaders, Irma Corado and Ibraheem Samirah. The democratic mob wants you to believe illegal are immigrants. They are not they are illegal, criminals. They game our system and our democratic leaders are ramroding our communities with them, regardless of laws that are broken. Ask Elizabeth which organizations she supports. Is it the workshop organizations that teach illegals how to break our laws. Does Elizabeth support giving illegals are free ride? Our leaders represent schools, why are they permitting illegals to over run our resources? Why? Aren't they suppose to protect our teachers, students and communities. No one is against immigrants. It is illegals. And it needs to be stopped. The only hood wearing critic is yourself. You wear the masks of antifa, KKK. You worry about morning coffee? You should be worried about those who are having their morning walks, who get up and have to go to work and pay half their salaries or more in taxes. Tax our gas, tax our cigarettes, tax our clothes, tax our homes, hidden fees in phone bills, internet, cable. and our employer is mandated to take out SS, federal, state taxes, fica where are the dishonest employer pays nothing.
Jim Griffin · May 23, 2019 at 7:30 am
SFC19 awakens before 6 am to issue sarcastic screeds against immigrants (legal or illegal) and Democrats simply for disagreeing with SFC19's agenda. It's actually somewhat amusing, like an SNL skit, if it weren't the very incivility cited in this opinion piece.

That it includes a diatribe against Trump for hiring illegals is quizzical. What does this person want? Who is the unaccountable, hood-wearing critic? Why not stand behind the inflamed rhetoric? How do they think they are saving our county, and from what?

Why attack Elizabeth Guzman, a US citizen who beat a Republican by over ten points for her seat in the Virginia House of Delegates? She has no role in "illegal entry" and like the others listed serves in state government, having no role whatsoever with federal immigration policy.

The face of incivility before morning coffee is ugly indeed, akin to the C-ville protesters carrying torches, spraying lighter fluid, shouting "Jews Will Not Replace Us" and the Nazi chant, "Blood and Soil."
Savefauquiercounty2019 · May 23, 2019 at 5:39 am
You should be thrilled you live in Virginia where democrats can murder their babies up til the day of delivery. Where your state pays their professional women professions ( teachers, social workers, nurses) the second to lowest salaries in the nation. State of Virginia democratic leaders are despicable in permitting illegals to livecamongst us, attack our ICE, have police stand down at rallies while their orchestrated, violent me2 protestors, blm, Antifa attack us. Ms 13 gangs are recruiting middle schoolers.
You should be very proud of the associations that funded Ralph Northam, Fairfax, and yes, Elizabeth Guzman. While these leaders permit illegal entry, they rob your communities of resources. The USA lived thru 911. Illegal entry should never have be permitted. Political one sided unions support democrat socialists.
You talk about women equality. Stop the leaders abusing our immigration laws, US labor laws and the dishonest businesses who hire illegals.

Jim Griffin · May 22, 2019 at 9:37 pm
Pumblechook: Yes, I respect the decisions of others. I think it absurd you assert judgment over my values from my defense of others' privacy in accord with a conservative Roe court.

Yes, it is offensive that you dishonestly attempt to tie me to the decisions of others, a form of ad hominem attack doubly offensive when you hide behind a pseudonym while doing so, still more so when as a man I can never know the considerations faced by a pregnant woman (perhaps in fear for her own life and certainly cognizant of the interests -- not conveniences -- she must balance).

Actually putting words in my mouth with quotation marks around them is just the over-reaching, controlling personality others assigned to you.

I respect the US Constitution and the rights it assigns. The law is clearly expressed for all to follow. Convenience? Human life? Have you actually read Roe? Is privacy and the long arm of the state mere convenience in your eyes?

Do you accuse Ireland of turning her back on humanity with the overwhelming vote of its citizenry? Is there no limit to your willingness to substitute your judgment for that of others?

"Air exists whether you breathe it or not." Huh? · May 22, 2019 at 6:31 pm
Jim Griffin: You like to use the word "respect". Are you witholding respect to the most vulnerable life in this equation? Isn't the human being created by the choices of others worthy of respect?

"Absurd" ?? I'm sorry if the truth that "Sperm + Egg = Human" offends you, but you cannot deny it's the truth.

"My own morality is not involved; I cannot become pregnant." The immorality of the act of killing another human for conveience exists irrespective of ones involvement in the act. Air exists whether you breathe it or not. Apologies again if that truth offends you.

Can you at least be honest and say "I know it's a human life, but I feel that the convenience of the mother is more important" In the past year there have been folks who have publicly admitted such. while I don't agree with them, I respect that they are at least honest about the truth of the situation.

While the democrats sleep (all day and all night) we have people pursuing leadership positions that are connected with LAColetiva. This should scare you. In Prince Georges County, Maryland (hour from Warrenton) a girl was murdered by 2 MS 13 gang. They mutilated her.
As Americans put aside their needs, Illegals have drain resources from schools, hospitals, the honest businesses, public health, welfare, and yes even Colleges have been paid for. Now democrats want preschool paid as well.

Given all these resources that could have been used for American homeless, American Firefighters, AMerican military, American police officers, American Teachers the illegals that have stayed and have been given citizenship (DACA) they are now complaining about how racist were are. Irma Corado who is running for Braddock County Supervisor stated she wants the "immigrants" now 1 to 100 residents in northern Virginia to be given more. She belongs to LaColetiva which teaches illegals how to beat our system, our laws.

The abortion issue here in Virginia is absurb. You have Ralph Northam who will support you having an abortion for whatever reason up til birth. Start with your own Governor and his issues prior to complaining about a state you don't live in.
Mark House · May 22, 2019 at 5:00 pm
Pumblechook - "This issue gets clouded with a multitude of rationalizations for what abortion - in truth - IS. That being one person taking the life of another."

Same thing can be said of guns, yet how dare anyone think of having gun control but it's OK for you to think you have a right to tell women what to do with their bodies. I'll make a deal with you, gun owners vote for stronger gun control (ban weapons with large capacity magazine and assault type) THEN and only THEN you MIGHT have something to say about abortion.

The far-right wish to declare "Evangelical Law" on all women, taking away a woman's reproductive rights and choice - plain and simple.
Jim Griffin · May 22, 2019 at 7:27 am
Pumblechook: Incorrect. Your claim of "clarity" is absurd.

My own morality is not involved; I cannot become pregnant. I do not substitute judgment as do you for that of those involved, patient or doctor. They are entitled to privacy in their decisions -- so declared a Republican-majority court in Roe. It is the law of this land and I respect it.

Indeed, whether carried to term and born healthy or intervention with a medical procedure, I support the difficult choices of those involved. Regardless of outcome, I would send flowers and not the sheriff.

Your arrogance astounds, assigning morality, calling it rationalization, claiming you know the "clear" "truth" -- all false. My comments make no reference to choices I might make were I similarly situated but instead are respectful of the privacy due and choices made by others, whatever they may be.

Indeed, your claim as made uses government intervention to ban contraception, application of pharmaceuticals and decisions made with doctors, an overreaching claim at odds with the law, constitution and women's choices.

At most, you shunt women across political borders for care into a jurisdiction that permits the care they and their doctor choose, as the Irish realized as their dominantly Catholic state chose to reverse course on over a century of regressive practices, now providing care over previously adverse judgment. That you would choose to punish a physician for treating a patient denies basic medical care that is essential under all circumstances. Shame on you. · May 21, 2019 at 9:26 pm
Jim Griffin: So based on your reply, it's clear you feel it's moral to terminate a human for convenience. This issue gets clouded with a multitude of rationalizations for what abortion - in truth - IS. That being one person taking the life of another. So I wanted to start with it's essence before getting mired in a discussion where I know there is no common ground. Thank You.
LindaW · May 20, 2019 at 11:10 pm
They are pro-birth...not pro-life. Pro-life supporters would care about the health and well being of mother, child, family. They just want babies to be born, doesn't matter what happens afterward or what kind of life they will have.
martinkus · May 20, 2019 at 6:58 pm
Well said Jim Griffin!

The ultimate goal of the far-right evangelicals is to force the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit Roe v. Wade and reverse the landmark 1973 decision. They believe they have the votes now. That is why they put up with the embarrassment in the White House...all they want is to reverse Roe v. Wade. Also, the comment by Pumblechook is one that could easily be made by the far-right with little working scientific knowledge of the field of human embryology. These folks want to demonize women. They can tell a women what she can do with her body but don't you come after our guns! Sickening!
Jim Griffin · May 20, 2019 at 5:27 pm
Pumblechook: A view so extreme as that you have expressed leads to outlawing various popular forms of contraception, including common birth control pills, because they can have an abortificient effect. It is also at odds with the law of the land, which assigns a constitutional right to privacy for women and their doctors until viability.

Isn't this the point: Ultra-conservatives have overrun an otherwise reasonable Republican Party? If the Alabama law weren't so very extreme, it would be discussed differently, but it's not, a sign that extremists have control and are acting in a counter-productive fashion by over-reaching, over-reaching that will continue until birth control pills and other similar contraceptives are banned.

Women worldwide have gained a degree of pharmaceutical control over their bodies; Many are determined to stop them from exercising their legal right to do so. That's a medical war that women cannot, will not lose, but women, their bodies and their rights will pay the price along the way.

Shame on those who would impose the hand of the state and the resources of the sheriff into the private, personal decisions of people and doctors. · May 20, 2019 at 2:01 pm

Where are the people fighting for the babies who have already been born? What about all the children living unloved and unwanted in orphanages and foster homes, in poverty, surrounded by crime and drugs, the children without loving homes and parents, the children with unmet medical needs, lack of food, clean water and solid education? Why don't they matter at least as much as the unborn? Many of them will have little chance at a decent life and will only end up in the same cycle as the one in which they were conceived.

How anyone could even consider forcing a woman to give birth to a baby conceived in violence, rape or incest is completely beyond comprehension. How many women will be suicidal in that situation? Then we lose both mother and child.

Yes, we need more education, better birth control and self control on the parts of both men and women, absolutely. But what happened to simple caring and compassion?
Silii · May 18, 2019 at 6:12 pm
Unborn babies. Life. heartbeat. Oh, god's gift, so precious, so deserving that even the pregnancy shouldn't be under the control of the woman and those she chooses to help her. So, when does that precious status end? as 6 year olds getting slaughtered in school with a weapon that should be banned? as a 17 year old in school shot to death with a weapon that should be banned? as a diabetic who can no longer afford insulin? as an unborn child whose mother has no access to prenatal care because Planned Parenthood clinics were defunded? when children and families are hungry and living in poverty because fiscal and social supports aren't funded any longer? the senior citizen who relied on Meals of Wheels when funding for the program was substantially cut? the 24 year old veteran who commits suicide because veterans' services aren't available or his/her body has been severely compromised and our social services just don't seem to care all that much? Or the migrant children who also have heartbeats?

I never claimed that abortion is a terrible traumatic experience. You are projecting your beliefs and thoughts to others, where we did not agree to that projection. What if the man did want to have a baby? What if the man wanted to get the woman pregnant and she agreed. What if she changed her mind?

You claim you want women to own their bodies yet you want to transfer the cause of the issue to the man. A whole lot of lack of responsibility going on there.

You claim abortion is a terrible traumatic experience. Wouldn't you, shouldn't you then support to take repsonsibility for their own bodies and make decisions about their bodies that rduce the chance of getting pregnant?

It is ultimately up to the woman and the woman only, not her husband and not her family, that decides whether of not to have an abortion. Should she not take the responsiblity for her own body with the same fevor that she demands for her right to act? How can yo act without taking responsiblity for your actions? Go progressive.

Demand vasectomies only if the male has a say in the abortion decision.

Your transfer blame of the pregnancy to the male. What part of it has the female taken?
Cammie Rodgers · May 17, 2019 at 2:13 pm

Silii - that is the end game of what is happening around the country. Equal prison time for equal responsibility in the act of conception and abortion is the only fair answer to this interference in the privacy of others.

It is a shame, a crying shame, how the majority of men and Republicans think they have ownership of a woman's body. Might as well put cameras in all bathrooms so they can live stream a woman doing self care so they can get their rocks off on how much CONTROL they have of others.

Fewer than half of the counties in Alabama have an obstetrician and you can bet your bottom dollar those are rural counties full of thousands of below poverty level girls and women, especially women of color. Bills like this, and the attitude behind them, have nothing to do with babies. They have everything to do with misogyny and racism and hate. There is not a word, not one single word, in this bill that mentions the impregnator and his responsibilities. How about a mandatory vasectomy for them, or mandatory time in prison? Did you men reading this just clutch your crotch? Well, clearly rape and incest are acceptable to the supporters of this bill because they don't care if a pregnancy is caused by either. I guess the legislators couldn't figure out what to put in the statute if daddy got his young teen daughter pregnant nor did they bother to consider that an 11 year old with an undeveloped uterus and pelvis might die from carrying and birthing a baby. Shame shame shame on all of you who support this and similar bills. Mind your own shameful business and get out of girls'and women's bodies and lives.

Their goal seems to be power over women. If they truly cared about ending abortion they would increase funding to planned parenthood and access for women to birth control. That is the way to end abortion--make it unnecessary--but they are too blinded by power to see the facts.
