Warrenton Church of Christ homecoming Sunday

Contributed Photo
The Warrenton Church of Christ constructed its building north of town in 1969 and conducted a dedication on March 15, 1970.
The Warrenton Church of Christ will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its building with a homecoming Sunday, June 9.

The congregation also will welcome home its missionaries, Marty Koonce and family, after 20 years in Africa (Togo and Rwanda).

Sunday’s celebration will begin with a fellowship coffee at 9 a.m., followed by a recounting of the beginnings of the congregation by the founding minister, Tom Seals, and preaching by Marty Koonce.

A barbecue luncheon will follow and the afternoon will wrap up with a time of singing and a short lesson by Tom Seals. Alumni are encouraged to come and reconnect with past and present members of the church family.

On Jan. 23, 1966, the Warrenton Church of Christ congregated for the first time under the leadership of Minister Tom Seals. The small group of members met in office spaces above the Peoples National Bank of Warrenton in the Northern Virginia Shopping Center. That building stands across from what is now the Rankins Hardware Store.

Within a year, the church outgrew that space and moved across the parking lot into a storefront that had previously been a shoe store. Until last year, it had been the Warrenton Décor.

After a year, the church outgrew that space and needed a building of its own. Land in the Warrenton Lakes area was donated by Ralph and Lois Moore. Bonds were sold to obtain funding for the Warrenton Church of Christ building to be constructed.

In 1969, the church building became a reality. The classroom areas were used for Bible study and the worship service while the main auditorium’s construction was being completed.

On March 15, 1970, the Warrenton Church of Christ dedicated its new building at 6398 Lee Highway Access Road, just north of town.
