Warrenton teen singer wins Bland Music Competition

Alyssa Amster
A 16-year-old from Warrenton won the vocal category at the James A. Bland Music Competition on Sunday, Feb. 16, in Washington, Va.

The Rappahannock County Lions Club sponsored the contest at the Theatre in Little Washington.

Alyssa Amster, a junior at Belle Meade Montessori School in Sperryville, took first place honors for her “upbeat, charming” performance of Mamma Mia by ABBA. This was her first win in the contest. As a sophomore, she came in second place with Twisted by Joni Mitchell. Alyssa competed against five other vocalists from Belle Meade Montessori School and Wakefield Country Day School.
Alyssa has studied voice with Maddison Hicks, who performs and records as Maddi Mae, for four years. Ms. Hicks has accompanied Alyssa for every Bland contest and recital performance.
Alyssa first became interested in vocal performance while preparing for her Bat Mitzvah with the Fauquier Jewish Congregation, and has sung in many recitals, school musicals, and performances at Belle Meade Montessori and Mountainside Montessori School, where she spent her preschool and elementary school years.
Not just a singer, Alyssa loves all parts of the stage. She recently played the title character of Tinker Bell in the Progressions Dance School performance at Fauquier High School in December; was in the ensemble of My Fair Lady at Fauquier Community Theater in the spring; and played Gander in Charlotte’s Web in the RAAC production in December 2018. She has also appeared in several productions with the EMBERS and SPARKS drama groups in Warrenton.
Alyssa will advance to the zone competition at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 8, at Culpeper Baptist Church.
