Founded on values, our nation has lost its way
By John Green
The word “value” denotes the worth of something, usually in dollars and cents. There are other, more important ways to look at values. Values define societies. They establish the right and wrong of a society’s actions. These values can only come from one of two places – God or man.
America’s values originated with the founding of our nation. The Declaration of Independence and our Constitution laid the foundation for our values. They established the primacy of God in our activities. We are not a theocracy. We are a republic.
History shows we have not always been true to our values. But we have struggled with and corrected our mistakes. History shows America has been a positive force in the world.
Today we have powerful forces within our society that are in conflict. We are experiencing a rejection of our founding, God-given principles. They are being replaced by man’s values. We are rejecting God. This is being done in the guise of obtaining a more perfect freedom for all Americans.
Today, they would have us believe we are free to determine our own right and wrong. Some political parties believe they can say anything in the belief their end justifies their actions and truth no longer matters. Abortions have become a form of birth control/selection and a way to obtain baby body parts. Doctors assist in suicides. Marriage can be between anybody or any thing. You can decide your own sex – just declare it. Homosexuality is just another form of love.
The list goes on. Is it any surprise so many people, especially the young, are having problems? Drug addiction is at record highs. One in four of our kindergarten through 12-grade students struggle with mental health issues (2015 Pride Survey). Many people suffer from depression.
We have replaced tolerance with intolerance. We have replaced the conscience with a no-fault, guilt-free society. We have replaced God with man. Our society is breaking down. Man was not made to live in a society without rules and values. Values matter. When we reject values we suffer the consequences – chaos!
Dinesh D’Souza — author, college president, White House domestic policy analyst and research scholar — said: “Man now seeks to displace God and create a secular utopia here on earth. In order to achieve this, the atheist rulers establish total control of society.”
The problem is the values.

Brandon J - A universal law is a law that all nations or all people embrace. I know some Americans point to our laws and say that they are based on Judeo-Christian teachings, for example because we outlaw theft and murder, which are in the 10 Commandments. But I don't know of any nation on this planet that allows for murder or theft, so those kinds of laws are universal and are not unique to a nation founded on Biblical teachings.
When I look at our law code, I see a series of universal and secular laws, and not the religious ideas that some Americans argue are the basis of our government.

There are many atheist who believe in honesty, honor, have good values and detest hate. There are also plenty of "good christians" who are not honest and hold hate in their hearts. You cannot equate godliness with values.
I think you need to look at our leaders and see what kind of role models they are, what values they hold, and what that conveys to our young.
The founders knew what they were doing when they set up this country with a separation of church and state.

What in the heck is a universal law?
Laws are a result of culture and sometimes vice versa. Culture is largely composed of religion. Please let's not conflate blue laws with fundamental liberties.
The problem we have in the US, and many other countries, is that the culture has changed exponentially in the past 50 years, discarding millennia of culture and tradition. Mental illness and addiction are at all time highs.
Perhaps it's because suddenly men are not allowed to be powerful or they're suspected rapists. Everyone is a winner and anyone can succeed at everything. Women who choose to be mothers and forsake a career are slaves. Gender is fluid and if you assume it you may have committed hate speech. If you don't consume and look as happy as those in your social media feed you are a failure. The list is endless and in your damn face.

Virtus - Exactly! I'm tired of Fake News too!

You assert that our nation was founded on Godly values.
I'm not sure that is true.
Take a look at the 10 Commandments. 2 of them are laws in the US, but are universal laws (murder and theft). Of the remaining 8, at one point there were laws about businesses being open on Sundays, but other than that none of those other 8 were ever a part of our law code.
While you make a big deal out of homosexuality, our nation in its infancy may have created laws regarding homosexual behavior but not about other Old Testament rules like those against eating pork, or eating shellfish, or wearing clothing of more than one kind of fabric.
I'm also not sure what source you might be referring to when you make the claim of our nation originally being based on Godly principals. Can you clarify?

It appears that you are trying to stir folks up by making the assertion that "God was created by man."
Melrose Carter · November 19, 2018 at 4:30 pm
God was created by Man not the other way around....so how can God be replaced by the one that created it. I believe Mr. Green is again trying to rile up the natives.
"Values are subject to change as a society encounters distinctive pressures and strains. That is why now Americans place a high value on “national security” because of the external attacks, insecurity.
The 1980s saw a return to conservative family values and morals, as well as a renewal of national pride.
• Values may not always be upheld. The Bill of Rights, which guaranteed the freedoms of speech, the press, and religion, is one important expression of American national values. Yet even this historic document cannot be seen as defining a set of values that all Americans share.
Beginning with Samuel Stouffer in the 1950s, sociologists have asked people whether these First Amendments rights should be extended to certain groups. While the right to speak or publish seems clearly established in the Bill of Rights, many Americans balk when asked if such privileges should be extended to atheists, communists, and a variety of others. Apart from this, the notion that America offers freedom for all has not always correspond to reality: the inconsistency of black slavery in a society supposedly dedicated to freedom and equality plagued the nation from the very beginning. Reality continues to demonstrate that some social groups and individuals are not as free as others. Because of religious, racial, sex, or age discrimination some Americans have not enjoyed the same rights and opportunities as others."
