A new high school fall baseball league will commence after Labor Day and two Fauquier County teams have signed to play in it.

Liberty and Fauquier will play in the Virginia High School Fall league according to organizer Scott Jacobs.

Fall baseball gives coaches a chance to see what improvement returning players have achieved since the previous season. It also allows them opportunity to shift players to new positions in a less-regimen format.

Tryout information for all three county programs can be found at the bottom of this article.

And younger players have a chance to show they have the right stuff.

According to league organizer Scott Jacobs other schools scheduled to play this fall include Mountain View, Brooke Point, Chancellor, Spotsylvania, Stafford and James Monroe.

“We’ll have 11 teams in the league with more signing up,” Jacobs said.

Liberty and Fauquier both used to play in the Rappahannock fall league.

“We were the first team in this area to play in the RFBL,” Liberty Coach Jeff Crane said. “That was 2009. Kettle Rub, Eastern View, Culpeper, and Fauquier followed our lead. The RFBL served us well until last fall.

Coach Crane said internal problems last fall led to his team joining the new group.

Kettle Run Coach Ty Thorpe said Sunday his school will field a varsity and J.V. team in the old league.

“One of the (RFBL) commissioners resigned and shut the website down three-quarters of the way through the season causing a lot of disruption,” Coach Crane said. “This new league formed after hearing about the problems in the RFBL.”

VHSFBL has pledged to be more flexible with scheduling Coach Crane added.

“Seven inning games instead of five, umpires paid by the league rather than each home team responsible for that chore and eighth-graders eligible to play junior varsity,” Coach Crane said. “With all those positives, I figured we would give them a try.”
